8N paper air filter

I asked the question a couple of years ago about putting a paper air filter on my 8N. I got a lot of replys that said do not do it that air through the oil filter works great and why go away from it. I did put a paper filter on it and when I am in the field it gets very full of dust and I have to clean it but my oil stays so much cleaner which will lead to engine life. I even have thoughts of putting a K&N filter on it "RACE"
 

if i were to go paper I would try and come up wif some kind of foam pre cleaner,,, that would save rite many paper filter replacements but some added maintenance,,, My lawn mowers have paper filters with the foam set up,,, I can run the paper filters for a few years with out replacing them but need to clean the foam every 10 hr. (small filters) i don't think any of my tractors run in no were as a dusty environment as my mowers,,, BTW I despise a K&N filters and think they are a waist of good money,,, I would offer you all you want but gave away probably 15 of'em first of the year

Folks that think a oil bath filter never needs clean'n have never took one apart,,, they do need servicing least once every 50 years,,, I c at least one a year thats stopped slap arse up,,, If I can not git it apart we have a winnie roast :lol:

it does amaze me my ford 3000 has a paper filter and has over 3000 hr. on the clock and the clock is broke,,, no smoke and the engine seams to b in good condition,,, tho its has a 1' thick of greas/dirt on it,,, paper filter must B work'n
 
3000 gasser should have dual paper elements one inner and one outer about $50 at napa for both
D will still have the oil bath. Can buy a lot of oil for $50
 

I pulled it out and said i need one and stuck it back in,,, did not c 2 filters tho,,,, I am wait'n fer it to warm up,,, gonna clean the chit out of it wif a hot pressure washer :wink: ,,, the plug wires were they go onto the plugs are buried with oil/dirt :cry: does sputter when the guv pulls in,,, gonna b clean fer i tackle a good tune up service 8)
 
I was thinking about going with an edelbrock air filter (rat rod tractor! yeah!) for our jube... could I see a pic or two of your set-up?
 
I have had this on for over two years now. Filter is sized for a Cummins B3.3 diesel engine. Has restriction indicator so I know when it needs changed. Have not had to change it yet. Philip.

What is UOA? I check my oil on a regular basis. I plow dirt, disk, plant, plow snow and pull logs with my 8N. it keeps the oil cleaner. I plan on putting a K&N filter on it.
 
I like that. Looks good. What does it take to put a vertical stack on the 8Ns. What are the pros and cons compared out the back.
 
UOA = Used oil anylysis. it's the only real verifiable way to know what is going on in the engine. Oil color is not a good indicator of oil life, content .. etc. Different oils tint differently, and oxidize at different rates and change color. color changes alone are not a good indicator of any oil property.

UOA can show wear metals, add pack remaining, and most importantly in your case.. silicon content.

I guess you have to believe me when I tell you that the oil is cleaner. When I say cleaner I mean less dirt in it. Most times when I pull a disk there is a cloud of dust. The air through the oil system just does not pull a good portion of the dirt out. I just ordered a K&N filter for it.
 
scientific studies show that a properly serviced oil bath filter simply filters better and provides better air flow than a clogging paper type. key is keeping it properly serviced.. which may mean changing the oil every 6-10 hours in heavy dust.

a snorkel anbd settling jar greatly improve the filter efficiency.

in god I trust.. everybody else.. I want evidence.. thus the UOA to prove cleaner oil than baseline... nothing personal.. it's just irrefutable proof..

I just ordered a K&N filter for it.
Wouldn't a Cyclone or Harco precleaner serve the same purpose & maybe even be cheaper in the long run?
At least compared to what prices I've seen on most K&N filters.
 
In diesel school, they tell you paper is 10 times better than oil bath.
Another SERIOUS dirt concern is the oil cap or vent.

Awfull lot of tractors still running around with oil bath filters for them to have sucked 10x worse than a medai not invented till 50+ ys later.

blood letting used to be 'the thing' for fixing people... guess that worked out huh?

Respectfully and sincerely, I have not found too many real "scientific" studies about oil-bath versus paper air filters, and I've found NONE that said an oil-bath is better than paper. (And I am referring here to actual science and not some maker of filter's "scienctific" study (advertisement) or some magazine's promotion of one of their advertisers product.)

The best paper filters are much better than the best oil-bath filters, and the best indication that is true is the number of modern automobiles and trucks and airplanes that use oil bath filters: None. Absolutely none.

No factory approves or produces any "heavy duty" oil bath filters either, and neither does the military recommend any oil bath filter over paper.

Having pointificated that... I'll go on to condemn K&N filters of any kind. They merely promote "better performance" ... thru less filtering. That is all. They do not filter as well as most other paper filters and they pass more air to the engine. Dirtier air, by the way, is how they brag their filters provide more horsepower.

The K&N type "re-cleanable" screens are the worst product foisted upon the mechanical world in modern times.

Blood-letting, like oil-bath and re-cleanable screens, are out-of-date technology. Quality, modern paper filters are better at filtering. Their down-side is that they require regular inspection and replacement.

Edit: By the way, I still have my oil-bath on my 9N and intend to keep it because I don't really make a living doing development work on, or actually working old N-Ford tractors. My occasional mowing/grading jobs don't require ME to wear a mask so the old Ford is probably OK too as long as I service it's original oil bath.
 
You can get the vertical pipe from many places, this web site sells them, TSC, etc. Cons, watch out for low branches, little more noise, rain entering pipe (I put elbow on mine), overheats carb when pulling 2 bottom plow for long distances on hot day (on plow day I put my horizontal pipe back on, mowing an everything else is fine). Pros, looks cool, sounds better, no exhaust in face when hooking up 3 point implements, did I say looks cool? Philip.
