12 Volt conversion kit

I have been reading up on the 12 neg ground system conversion kits. Most are 1 wire alternators. What does one want? I heard 63 amp vs 30 amp, some alts have what some installed called low volt cut in some say self exciting, etc.?

timejati.......1-wire conversion kits are deceptively desirable. (after all, 1-wire is better'n 3-wires, eh?) They still take about 1800rpms to self-excite. Thats about 3/4-throttle on a COLD ENGINE. ...or... everytime you re-start on a warm engine, 3/4-throttle. Its the LAW.

On yer belchfire-V8, yer autotranny don't start movin' yer car until about 2000rpms and usually you take'r up to about 3500rpms before it shift gears so you never have initial charge excitation problems.

The popular 3-wire Delco 10-SI starts charging at about 600rpms. Can you tell the difference? you betcha. Problem with 3-wire alternators, they need an idiot lite (or diode or other decoupler scheme) in the excitation circuit so you can turn the ignition OFF and engine stops. .......Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons.

Hey Dell,
The small alternators off say a fork lift, wood chipper or kubota Tractor are they any good? Are they 1 or 3 wire.
I heading down to the bone yard next week to look for other parts and I would like to get the smallest alt (that will charge right)for my 8N.The whole system is being changed for good reasons.

I prefer the 3 wire alt,,, as of this time I do not know of a good kit for a front mount are lets say a direct fit no modifications needed plug and play kit,,, the side mounts dist kits are pert neer a plug and play deal. I think all the 10SI alts are the same ,,, the make up of the stator determines the rated out put,,, 35 or 65 amps will do the job,,, most rebuilt alts are 65 amp even if its sold to B used to replace a alt used were it calls for 35 amps,,, Plain Jane 4 cyls no AC are power accessories cars used the lower amp rating

low volt cut in some say self exciting,,, go with the 3 wire and you will not have to depend on the alt to self excite (turn its self on)

I have a 1950 8N side mount that I rebuilt and installed a 12 volt kit purchased from nnalert. It was easy to install. I start my tractor at about 900 RPM. The alternator starts to charge as soon as the tractor starts. I am rebuilding a 1949 8N front mount and purchased a 12 volt kit from this site. The pully on this alternator is the same size as the one on my 1950 8N side mount so I expect it to charge at the same RPM. It is the pully diameter on the alternator verues the pully diameter on the water pump that detemines at what RPM the engine needs to run to make the alternator charge. I have never done a test to see how low of an RPM I could start the 1950 and get the alternator to start. I need to do that.

Not that I have a good memory, but if I recall your previous posts correctly, you have a 9N w/ a 12v battery & a 6v generator. Unless something has changed since Jan 13, my advice remains unchanged (the link below)
12 Conversion Question

Would ya happen to have a pix of the pulley that came on the alt in the kits,,, most are wrong and folks don't know it,,, most come with a pulley made for a 3/4 wide belt,,, n's use a 5/8" wide belt,,, their is no such thang as a universal 3/4 - 5/8 pulley,,, that term is made up by Sellers to make a extra buck cut'n the cost of buy'n the correct pulley

I can take a picture but that may not tell much. What dimensions should I take and post that will tell if the kits came with the correct pulley?

Dell....what you say is true...however,if one buys the conversion kit from nnalert, the kit comes with the small 2-1/2" pulley on the one wire alternator and the alternator begins to charge at about 600 rpms.I think this is a better set up than the 3 wire alternators.Of course this is just my opinion and I'm no electrical guru like you. don b

I have never ordered a TISCO kit,,, it mite come with the right pulley C'n as they do offer the rite pulley for this conversion # 98NAA5825 its the rite pulley for a 5/8" wide belt 5/8X2-1/4

most pulleys that come in the kits are wrong,,, way off either 2 small and a replacement pulley comes in the kit thats for a 3/4" ,,,belt 2 wide,,, it will work for awhile till the belt wares and bottoms out in the pulley,,, v belts pull off the sides not the bottom  Its better to have the belt set proud of the pulley than have it run deep in the pulley groves,,, if it stands a tad proud under normal; usage the v of the belts will stay in contact of the V in the pulley and not bottom out as it wares

Oh things have changed. Turns out the first 3 people that tested it didnt' know what the hell they were doing. The forth guy opened up and said nope the wires or coils or something like that is fried and sure enough he touched them and they crumbled. Probably from runninga 12v bat on a 6 v system or who knows. Also has bad bushings, brushes and armature and a crack in something else I can't remember. I can't seem to find the right parts to fix and cant afford a new genny. Now the wife says get it fixed or is gone so I may spend the money to conver to a full 12V with alternator and electronic ignition which a friend actually gave me. And pray that works so I don't have to sell my baby!

If it really comes down to one-or-the-other, keep that tractor......I guarantee you will be happier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kirk........ah yes, the "Nippo-Denso" alternator. I don't know iff'n they are 1-wire, 2-wire, or 3-wire. Besides being metric, they will probably need different mounts than the popular and cheap Delco 10-SI alternator commonly used. Interestingly enuff, I believe CNH Ford/New Holland sells a 12v conversion for N-Tractors that features the "Nippo". ......Dell
