If all of my 9N is 6V and I have a 12V Battery with a Ceramic Reducer which reduces the volts from 12V to 6V. Is this "do-able"? I just replaced my cut-out and either my ammeter is broken or my genny which the mechanic says works - doesn't.

If I put in the 6V battery then I think I need to get rid of the Reducer/Resister. But do I just hook the wires together and call it good?

timejati......you write....."I just replaced my cut-out and either my ammeter is broken or my genny which the mechanic says works - doesn't".......did'ja remember to re-polarize yer 2-terminal roundcan cut-out???

Iff'n not, do it again. Just "arc-spark" the roundcan terminals together, engine off. I use a pair of pliers handles. You can use barb'd-warr or bailin'wire. You can re-polarize as many times as it takes to feel warm and fuzzy ...er... charged.

While you can use a 12-volt battery with a 12-to-6v converting resistor; yer 6-volt genny will NEVER CHARGE yer 12-volt battery and soon you'll be running round on a discharged 12-volt battery and wondering why your sparkies are weak and hard starting. Either convert to 12-volts and do it right ...or... fix yer 6-volt system, it works just fine too. .......respectfully, Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason. That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6-volt 52-8N and I know how to do it right, the first time. Infact I know 8-ways to do it right and they all work.

I did polarize it and it made a clicking sound when I did it. I was attempting to go 6v but am unsure what to do with the reducer resister? Since that reduces it from 12v to 6v I assume with a 6V battery I don't need the reducer. Should I just join the wires together?

Agreed that 12v is not needed on an N tractor, hell you can start them with a hand crank.. what justifies 12v for me is; what do you do when your other tractor or automobile is dead and you need to jump start it, yes 12v. Once they standardized to 12V was good enough reason for me to standardize. I can see keeping 6V for originality purposes for restoration.. My two cents...

If your 12v car battery is dead, you're right; a 6v tractor won't start it. But, if your 6v tractor battery is dead, you can easily & safely jump it from your 12v car. See tip # 43

timejati.......yes, for 6-volt operation, just join the wires removed from the 12-to-6v reducer together so yer sparkies will work. You will STILL NEED the "infamous ballast resistor" with yer squarecan ignition coil and 4-nipple distributor......Dell

Hello Bruce – I know you put a lot of work in the tip list, but maybe you should have mentioned that #43 only works if your 6v battery has enough spunk left to fire the ignition. Without that, you’ll crank fast, but that’s all – no run. RounderRick
