HELP

I need help hooking up a12 volt alt to a 9/n 12 volt NEG ground system. I have this 9n tractor with a 12 volt battery and 6 volt generator, that’s not working. I just can’t get my head around this setup. Guess someone couldn’t either.

Can any one offer any advice or even a solution?

Regards Jim

Bulldog........it should be intuitively obvious that a 6-volt genny won't charge a 12-volt battery. Therefore REMOVE yer 6-volt genny and 2-terminal roundcan cut-out below the battery tray on the steering column, and associated wiring.

Then wire yer 12-volt alternator output to the battery side of yer 2-terminal starter can. Remember yer 12v alternator DEMANDS negative ground. (thats yer flatbraid battery cable) You do know what ground is, don't you?

You do know how to determine which battery terminal is NEGATIVE, don't you? Look for the word negative or a minus-sign (-). The other terminal will be labeled positive or have a plus-sign (+). Isn't that amazing???

Write back iff'n you still don't understand what to do.......Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason. That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6-volt 52-8N and I know how to do it right the first time. Infact I know 8-ways to do it right and they all work.

Ditto what Dell said... once you get the alt mounted.. it's charge stud to the bat side of the starter switch on the back of the steering pedistal.

if it is a 1-wire job.. that's all you got to do.

if it is a 3-wire job, make a small wire with a ring terminal and female spade connector and jumper the #2 terminal to the charge stud.. make up another wire and run from #1 terminal to the ignition side of the ignition switch.. run this thru a 194 marker lamp or diode capable of handling 1a/50piv, or preferably, 3a/20piv.. marked end of diode (cathode) towards alternator.. a 1n5408 is ideal.

I think this site my be helpful http://home.att.net/~jmsmith45/
look under main/repairs....12volt conversion
List at least 3 ways to do it and there are also some pretty good diagrams on the site as well. Yesterdays tractors is a good site, has parts etc....but I was able to follow the wiring info at smiths site easier...may just be me.

Bulldog.......what is so difficult about lifting yer 12-volt battery and turning it around so yer flatbraid ground cable is connected to the 12-volt battery negative (-) post?

You really need to take yer 12-volt alternator in to enny auto parts store for a "free" test ......Dell

dell, sorry so long getting back to you, just wanted ya to know got er fixed!!! i just could not get that in my head for some reason.anyways thanks a bunch. bulldog
