I am having a problem with my 2N.The alternator pully broke,so I bought a new Alt.And new wiring,to replace old wires.( TO ALT,IGnition/SWITCH)
It's a 1 wire to Alt.Well after replacing wiring and Alt.tractor ran for about 5 mins and quit.the resistor was smoking.I changed ceramic resistor and same happened!! What is wrong? I think maybe I have a wire crossed, but it started and runs for a litttle while.I dont have a good 12v wire diagram to trace my problem.Does any one know if wires are on wrong post somewhere ? Or why tractor runs good for 4-5 mins then stops and resistor is glowing??What did we do wrong?
Any help/advice is appreciated.I am disabled and my son is trying to fix my 2N.
Any suggestion ?? I need advice. HELP !!!!!!!
Thanks
Dan

If it has been converted to 12 Volts, and still has the original 6- Volt coil, you need TWO resistors in the circuit, the original ballast resistor AND a 6-to-12 Volt converting resistor.

Is it possible when you rewired it, you did not get one of the resistors back in the circuit?

If so, this MAY have "cooked" the coil and/or burned the points.

The 5Th diagram down from the top on the site linked below would be very similar to what you have. It shows the original resistor on the terminal block AND the additional resistor, Just ignore the wire and "marker lamp" connected to the alternator's #1 terminal, since you have a "one-wire" alternator, this is NOT needed.

(Ceramic resistors smoke when they heat up, when new, or if there is any oily residue on them. Do not condemn a resistor just because it smokes.)

There are some halfway decent wire diagrams on myoldfords.com

However.. the main tractor wire diagram is in the i&t fo-4 manual. For a 1 wire alternator, you can simply use the oem wire diagram, and attach the 1 wire from the alternator to the same place as the "battery" wire from the OEM voltage regulator would have attached to ( heading to the ammeter )... Otherwise all other wireing is the same.

As to why yours now quits and resistor smokes.. hard to say.. my guess is you hooke dupt he charge wire to a point where it is trying to charge thru the resistor, and therfor burning it up. Hard to tell how that happened.. since the alternaot and/ or oem generator would not have attached to the resistor at all.. but instead attached to the ammeter.. etc...

well we went over electrical with a ohm meter.all post and wires has juice except from the post on ballast resistor wire that goes to coil.It seems to be bad B.resistor.Tomorrow will pickup a new B.resistor and condenser. Then we'll see if we have fire to her.
Does what we found sound like we're on right track to get old gal to run??
Comments please..

Dan,
Ohmmeter or voltmeter? With the ohmmeter, the resistor should show a low resistance. It's usually "works/don't work" with a resistor. Nothing in between. With the voltmeter, you should show either battery voltage or something a little less (depending on points open or closed) with key switch on and measuring from "downstream" post of resistor to a ground. Bad resistor will show infinite resistance and no volts.
