While changing the oil on my 2n today, I noticed that it has a 1/8 brass pipe plug in the bottom of the can.. therefore making it easy to drain the oil canister during an oil change. Looks like it could be oem.. threads are tapped into a built up area.. doesn't look buggered ...but guess it could have been an 'elegant' add on by a skilled previous owner. My 8n doesn't have this. Is this a 9n / 2n deal.. or did someone add this to mine as a convienience.opinions?

Also..a comment on 12v ignitions. Though I like my 6v equipment ( 52 8n and 50' JD-B ).. I must say.. the 'extra' sparkies available with the 12v coil are amazing. When i pulled my 46' 2n apart today to do the ignition, first I noticed the ancient h-10 plugs must have been gapped/burnt open to nearly .045... in addition had an old set of 7mm anti-radiostaic wires.. On the inside of the 'crab' cap, the contacts were burnt and extremely coroded. The were also very recessed into the plastic of the cap, whereas the new cap had the contacts ground flush with the cap walls. I'm guessing this cap hasn't been changed in decades. Also, rotor was so old tha tthe top contact had a hole rubbed in it, and the 'electrode' was visibly shorter than the replacement.. It had receded / burnt back .050 I would guess.

All this extra tolerance, and the thing still started and ran when i got it..

Also noticed now with it all back together, I can get about .5 inch of bright blue spark from the wire against the block.... my 6v 52 8n only dreams of spark like that...

I have a feeling this 2n had been sitting non-running for a long time before I bought it, as it smoked a bit when i got it.. but after running it some and a fluid change, it has cut back a bit... I though perhaps rings freeing up?.. so I've added some mmo tot he gas, etc

oh well.. guess I gotta go to bed so i can get up bright and early and mount a tire...

Sounder,
try some Casite in the oil. I always had problems with the valves sticking in my Ford flathead when sitting for long periods. An old-timer told me to put the Casite in and I never had the problem again. Best stuff I ever used but if you put it down the carb, make sure you are not in enclosed area because will flat knoock you out. Also if through carb don't let engine die or sit long if it does die, per manufacturers advice. After running through carb put some in oil to finish job.

I'll show my ignorance, and ask what casite is.

thanks

Ignorance, I doubt that, you are just unfamiliar with the name or fact it is a engine additive family of products. Actually, it was really well known in the 60's but STP and similar brands had more advertising dollars.
Try their site and check their history. I'm not much on or believe in quick fixes or miracle oil treatments but this stuff works great on stuck valves and the like.

I have a '49 8N motor on my '47 2N tractor and it has the canister drain plug. If it wasn't there there would be a turkey baster missing from the kitchen. I don't think I could stand changing the oil and leaving that can full of old stuff.

Dell is the man when it comes to spark. So far as the smoking you are probably right about things starting to free up. One thing you may want to check is the oil level / weight in the air cleaner. Too full and too light could be a contributor.

Best of luck.

8N's seem to be hit and miss with the filter cannister drain plug, they are both ways. I have a 51 with the drain and a 51 without, a 52 with and a cannister from a 52 without. Seems most 9 and 2N's have them, my 47 has.

Sounder, the drain plug on the oil canister was OEM for all 9N's & frontmount 8N's, and was discontiued w/ the sidemount distributors....except for the very early model sidemounts....like mine....that still have it! Unless somebody retro-fitted mine!

I have a 1947 2-n and it also has the brass drain plug on the oil filter can. You say the 8-n's do not have one. I like to use it to drain more of the old oil from the can.

My '47 2N has what looks like thick washer-type bosses at the bottom and drain plug locations. It's easier to tap a hole in a thick piece of metal than it is through sheet metal. Just a design feature (those guys knew what they were doing and did it right!). I wish more stuff was built like these N's were.

Sounder........1/2" of blue sparkie from a frontmount ignition coil with a 12 volt conversion! No wonder yer rotor contacts are eroded, your cap contacts eroded, and it still jumped sparkie gap of 0.045 while new sparkie gap should be 0.025. Points are probably burned to crisp too. (gap 0.015)

Sounds to me like you've gotta the OEM 6 volt coil being hit with full 12 volts. Your coil will crappout after about 1 hr (or less) of runnin' and will "cure-itself" overnite after the melted insulative tar re-hardens.

Unfortunately, there is no eazy way to tell if'n your squarecan ignition coil is the OEM 6 volt coil except by measureing with an ohm meter. Connect one ohm meter lead to the top terminal, and measure to eather bottom leads. The secondary winding will be about 7000 ohms. (6 or 12) The 6 volt primary will be about 1 ohm and a 12 volt primary will be about 5 ohms. (thats a major noticeable difference in primary winding resistance)

You maybe in the market for a new modern 12 volt squarecan frontmount ignition coil........Dell
