I've been toying with idea of retiring my 52N to the shop for full restoration and a long over-due retirement for both of us. Found a line of China imports tractors at www.farmprotractors.com and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. Thanks in advance

I love the tractor, when it's running!! I've had hydraulic leak problems since the first hour. It took 3 months, but Buddy's Tractor in Citrus county Florida finally got the clutch replaced. Butch, at home office, is trying to help..but it's very frustrating. My main problem is there isn't a qualified mechanic for this tractor in west central Florida. If I had to do it again, I'd spend double the money and buy a Kubota.

Re: FarmPro Tractor Question in reply to LeeOH, 04-09-2003 04:18:38
I have 3 questions, myself:
I can't seem to find a website for FarmPro tractors using my web browser. The site URL mentioned in the original post, www.farmprotractors.com, doesn't seem to work. Anybody have one that works?

I can't even find any dealer sites near us, down here in S.E. Texas. We have been looking for asmaller tractor, mainly for mowing, maybe light box blade work, and found a 'so-called' dealer, which is where we first heard of them. I say 'so-called', because it's just a pretty run down auto repair garage that's opened up recently in a nearby town, and has ONE new Farmpro sitting out front! The man assurred us that as soon as he sells the one, he gets another! No info on service, parts, anything, just a sort of he'll sell it to you. ARE THERE REAL AUTHORIZED DEALERS for these things? what about service, parts availablity, etc? (And no, I don't think I'd want to have to try to run down some place in China to try to order them from ourselves!)

And, those here mentioning having one and being satisfied seem to have just got them, have only 3 or 6 hours on them. Anyone here had one long enough to know how they hold up? While the rpice seems attractive to us, not if the thing isn't going to last us a few years!

Just visited the web site. Try farmprotractors.com, without the www's. Came right up for me and is listed right above this site! They have dealers listed all over. I found some tractors listed on e-bay with free shipping from somewhere in Texas. I am very interested in the 25 h.p. 4x4. This is a new company and seems to be trying very hard to please. Good luck to all!

Thanks for the responses guys. I assume that since we are all 8ners that we must be grass roots patriots. I really hate to think of buying foreign and would really like a new Deere, but cant afford that. If Walmart didnt carry import mrsde, then they wouldnt have anything on the shelf;and I would have to send my Ford pickup back to Canada. But thanks for the technical advise.

I've never owned a China made tractor.
But I have owned some of the tools made there.
They make them to look as good as the higher priced tools. It's not untill you get home and start using them that you find out you just threw your money away.
My guess is if you buy one you'll be looking to buy a new tractor within five years.

If you think Fords or John Deere or any other tractor available today is built in America you're crazy. I'll stop buying imported items when America stops importing them. In the meantime, enjoy your Japanese VCR, microwave and any number of other items around your house including that computer you're using to access this great web site.
I'm as American and patriotic as anyone else here so don't blame me or LeeOH for the demise of American industry.

LeeOH,

And John_t, when you buy the Chinese tractor you do help the Chinese economy, I know it's not popular to help our economy these days, just complain about things being so bad without consideration of why they get so bad.

I remember being called to a strike at a coal mine years back, the miners were complaining about not being paid enough, the company said they couldn't afford higher wages because the demand for coal was down and the parking lot was full of Jap cars, does anyone besides me make a correlation between the Jap cars and lack of demand for American coal?

I know American products cost more, I also know I don't much care if there are hard times in Japan or China, but I do care if there are hard times here!

Re: FarmPro Tractor Question in reply to LeeOH, 04-09-2003 04:18:38

Lee,
Let me start by saying I own one of these tractors.
Mine is a Jinma. (which makes the Farm-Pro)
I sold my 52 8N in order to buy the Jinma and have never looked back.
I must admit I would have loved to keep my 8N too but had to keep my wife happy at the same time.
In my case, I imported mine directly from China but there are dealers in the states who sell them assembled or in a crate. Parts are readily available state-side.
Email me if you want more info. There are plenty of web sites I can refer you to.

Are these things any good after seeing Kubotas all over the place and reading about "American" tractors made overseas Iguess the only thing that matters is are they any good and where do you get parts?

Re: FarmPro Tractor Question in reply to LeeOH, 04-09-2003 04:18:38
Many of these new import tractors are setting up parts houses over here for ease of use. For instance, we have a local case dealer that sells mahindra.( india ). they order there big parts from a place in texas, but stock the common replacement item stuff ( filters / bearings, etc ) they would normally stock for any line they carry.

I have physically driven one of the farm pro Jinma tractors. Farmpro usually orders a economy line jinma ( no ps, etc ).. but it otherwise is a jinma chineese tractor. Comes to them crated, semi assembled.. they finish assembly and sell.

I was very skeptical at first.. but considering you can buy their smallest unit for about the same price as an 8N.. it is attractive.

They are plainly an economy tractor... has fibreglass instead of sheet metal on some models.. electrical is simple.. and are no frills. Simple gauge cluster or idiot lights. Fit and finish is actually better than what I expected., as I really did expect to see misformed and rough casts.. and leaks.

throttle Linkages are simple.. but work... just.. look at our fords..

I've heard stories that you have to change out many / all of the bolts / nuts because they are not hardened correctly.. I can't comment there as I don't own one.

They do not have the fit / finish of say.. a Yanmar... which is a decent diesel, but after having experience with the yanmar, and what I learned hear about maintaining these fords.... I wouldn't be overly afraid of owning a chineese tractor. I almost bought one twice in the last few years. One when i needed a tractor bigger than the yanmare.. I almost bought from northern tool.. their 254 nortrac which is a rebranded jinma.. had already called for price, and info on delivery, when i went to the NH dealer and literally stumbled into a great deal on my 1920. Later I wanted a small tractor to use to bushhog and maintain another peice of property, and wanted to leave it there.. so i looked at the farm pro 20hp jinma they had for 2999. almost bought it on the spot after a test drive.. but decided to wait, as it was a 3 day sale event.. that weekend I got my 8n instead.. go figure.

One thing though.. the farm pro people.. at least the ones I talked to.. were dumb as rocks... I had never touched a jinma.. but had read and researched as much as possible on them online... just wanted to touch one. When i got there, the staff new nothing about the tracotrs.. they didn't even know how to use the high -lo range on the tranny. The sales guy I was talking to started asking me questions.. and at one point, when other customers were asking him questions.. he actually sent them over to me.... I didn't feel like 'selling' their machines.. so i left.. but I was happy to have driven one.

Not a sales pitch for them.. just my experiences.

take it for what it's worth ( .02$ )

don't forget that OEM replacement parts, china or not, will not be priced like chinese knock-off parts for 50 yr old tractors. You pay frieght from china on every piece you buy. Long (korea?) Mahindra (india) Branson tractor (korea) and the list goes on. Not to mention how hard the guys at JD, Case/New Holland are working to keep their jobs

JD's are made overseas now, like everything else. Only the engineering work is done here in the US. I actually work for Long, and we're working on building a compact from the ground up. Granted, it too will be made from parts overseas, but it'll be just as "American" as a JD or New Holland. (We actually have rights to Ford's old compact tractor line that was made in India)

Before you buy one, check on availabily of parts. You may have to wait for them to come from China.
