I just bought a 2N and the owner did not know if it had been converted to 12V. He started it with a 12V battery. What is the easiest way to tell?

Post a photo of the generator/alternator, voltage regulator. Or at the very least, a very good description of them. Any extra resistors in the ignition wiring?

Does it have an alternator or a generator? A 12v battery or a 6v battery? If it has an alternator, 99% chance it's a 12v (I'm aware of exactly 1 6v alternator) If it's got a generator, chances are it's 6v, but there are a lot of 12v generators out there. So, now that you own an old tractor, make your next purchase a $15 analog multi-meter (tip # 47, below) from Wally-world & check the generator output. And, make sure you get the manuals (tip # 39)

Check where the ground cable goes.
on 6V it would be grounded to the positive post on the battery,
on 12 V the ground should be hooked up to the negative post of the battery.

(quoted from post at 11:01:39 07/30/08) It doesn't look like any altenator I have ever seen.

If as from factory, it should look somewhat like these pictures of gen (probably one wire rather than three & not as 'pretty'..hehe) and cut-out (the round can just above the circled starter switch). If you install a 6v battery, be sure to ground the Positive post of battery and it would be good to follow the polarization procedure of momentarily jumpering across the two cut-out terminals for a second or two prior to starting tractor.

Then after it has been running 10 -15 minutes, measure battery voltage. It should be around 7volts at a fast engine speed if charging correctly. Also, look at ammeter for charge vs discharge.

Count the number of caps on the battery.. figure 2v per cap.. thus 3 caps = 6v, 4 caps = 8v, and 6 caps = 12v.. then decide if the battery matches the charging system.

I have removed some rust from the generator and it says Ford AA-12. Does that mean 12Volt? Sorry if it sounds like I have not been taking everyones advice, but the pictures did not look like mine and there was no battery on it to look at.

You might do same dusting & cleaning on regulator....sometimes they have voltage and polarity stamped on them.
