12 Volt Battery That Fits And Looks Like The Original

and does not leak in the heat of summer. What do you guys recomend for teens to 110 weather?

Seems about 15 years ago I started seeing more batteries fail within the first three year period. Just as many came in on the hook for corroded terminal ends. One reason the car guys prefer Optima.

What leaks? Your battery?

You need a strong battery to:
1. Spin the starter
2. Engage the Bendix
3. Provide voltage to the coil.
Tips on battery care and performance:
As the battery gets weaker, the first thing to fail is your spark. The more current you use to spin the starter, the less you have for the ignition. It doesn't really matter much if the battery is "fully charged" until you test it correctly. 4 Volts is an almost dead unit. Bench test under load and specific gravity must be tested. Your trusty local starter/alternator shop can bench test it on their special machine, usually at no charge –no pun intended. No matter what else you do, the battery must be fully charged. Cheap brands are prone to poor lifespans. The TSC and Wally World ones are the worst. 7 years is a good run for a 6V battery. Briefly in a nutshell, you want a GP-1 6V (12V = GRP 25 or GRP 35) AG battery -no Deep Cycle or RV/Golf Cart types. I suggest you invest in one of the better brands. Those would be DEKA, INTERSTATE, EAST PENN/DURACELL, or EXIDE. I'm not sure who makes the NAPA one but I've heard good things about it. Get at least a 550-750 CCA with the average cost at about $125.

A fully charged 6v battery should read about 6.3 - 6.6 volts. In order to get that charge level, your v/r must allow 7.2 volts to the battery. Specific gravity should be 1.24 - 1.28 on each cell. A hydrometer is used but your shop has the machine to test under load. Battery cables are important too. 6V cables are thick as your thumb due to current used and the ground is a braided flat strap. SEE DENNIS CARPENTER or nnalert. Clean all the grounds & the battery posts. 6V mantra: Clean, bright, and tight.

A float charger is VERY helpful; and NOT a trickle charger, but a float charger, like the DELTRAN Battery Tender Jr.® ™. It is a popular brand, available at Walmart, $30. A battery charger, even a "trickle" charger, left unattended will eventually boil out a battery. Connect the battery Tender to your battery when the tractor is idle for periods over a week. Constant Draining/Depleting and recharging the battery is the quickest way to ruin it.

im Daily: To re-word my question. Is there a quality 12 volt battery that look's like the six volt that came on the tractor.

I have the tools and knowledge you described. I'll add that ambient heat will also cause your battery to leak around the terminals. It is a byproduct of a poor design. Also I reworded my question in the Ferguson forum. Did you see that one?
Thank's

I use ACDELCO group 25PG if I can get it in PG (free 42 mo replacement).

I run a bead of silicon dielectric compound around the base of the post install the cable end and paint it with dielectric grease. Works for me, make an appointment I will write you a prescription : )...

still have about 1 1/2 tubes of the blue Ford tubes left over from the 2005 cruise control campaign. Is that about the same compound as what you use? I didn't think about making a tool to force it between the case and post. I take it that is what you did with that medicine bottle and what look's like a valve. Thank's for the idea.

I thought the pill bottle was just the container for the dielectric grease!

Its just a handy way to store the brush (not a tool)... I use this stuff like water its a good rubber lube and the best battery terminal protector out there... To make this tractor related when installing the air tube hoses on a N once you apply a little of this to the inside of the hose they are EZ to slide on the tube. You can push the hose all the way on the tube and then slide it onto the carb are air cleaner... It works great on the cooling hoses also use just a little... You install the radiator then hood then have to adjust the radiator with the top hose to fit the hood adding this to the hose allows you to loosen the clamp and easily move the hose at the head...

You may know how aggravating some of the bellows that fit on throttle body's are it allows them to be slipped on and off : ) Back to the air filter tube hoses keep extras they are cheap don't fight them when they harden up : ) I good seal there is a good thang...

thought some of the purist with show tractors would be familiar with reproduction batteries. Some of the high end restored cars get the correct appearing battery and some 12 years back I installed an Autolite reproduction in a 68 CJ Torino. It was labeled with the correct cranking amperage for the car. Tinkered with a few things to get it on the road again but the $41X.XX battery price stuck with me. You can get a 12 volt battery disguised as a 6 volt replica but I do not know if the automotive batteries were used in the N Series.
