hello...how many turns approx does the needle valve in the bottom of the carb need outwards for a 49 zau?

thanks
does it need much adjustment from road work running empty to working it hard pulling a plough or drag?

Well, it shouldn't. The carburetor is supposed to compensate for the load.

Be aware that your idle mix screw is for air, not fuel. So you back the idle screw out for leaner and turn it in for richer.

That said, Daddy's ZB seems to want a little richer mix in the winter (temps. 20s to 40s-not like the midwest) than in the Summer (80's to
90s.). But that may be because of the different Summer and Winter gasoline blends here in NC.

The service manual for the Marvel-Schebler TSX-97 carb (which I assume you have) contains several adjustment instructions ending with power or load adjustment which pertains to the needle valve at the bottom. With the engine running at governed speed under load, turn power adjusting
needle to the right, or clockwise, a little at a time until the power drops appreciably. Then turn the needle to the left, or counter-clockwise, until the engine picks up power and runs smoothly. This will give an economical part throttle mixture, and, due to the economizer action, the proper
power mixture for full throttle operation. Due to variations in temperature or fuels it may be necessary to richen up this mixture by backing out the power adjusting needle, a small amount at a time until good acceleration is obtained. Hope this helps.....
