mm fun 03-09-2013 14:41:49 50.123.232.250 Report to Moderator	I know this is a loaded question that will have different comments but after a total engine rebuild (ground crank, .040 over pistons, and a good valve job done) on a 445 gas what would be the correct way to break the engine in? The book says no heavy loads or long idle time. What to do? [Reply]   [No Email]

Today's high quality oils have additives that will not allow the rings to seat properly. I use John Deere Break-in oil for the break-in period. It is not cheap but after having to correct an engine that used oil after being overhauled it is well worth the extra cost. [Reply]  [No Email]

We were told in vo-tech dont baby the engine, work it, grind feed..haul manure..etc. Also told, like you stated no prolonged idling, usually atleast half throttle or 3/4 throttle but main thing there is to VARY the engine speed constantly, hence no long idling. When I overhauled my ZAU I ran it on the straight disk in the oat stubble field in 3rd gear with the disk at a slight angle..light load, then a little more angle after a few passes, then in 4th gear. That was back in 1986 and Ive very rarely had to add any oil to it when using it, usually when working it hard but that is normal. I would think if you put a light load on it and go from there increasing it more and more it should work just fine. I believe they usually use a lighter oil for break-in purposes as well.
