MDHJR 07-25-2012 17:41:39 65.55.67.166 Report to Moderator	Re: UTU diesel / UDU in reply to Dieselbear, 07-23-2012 17:52:24   The UDU diesel I have seen had a diesel starter in the crankcase (held on by 3 bolts) but still had a govenor hole in the side of the crankcase. The hole was coverd by a plate and had a slug in the hole to direct the oil around where the govenor shaft would have been. THis is similar to the early GTBD setup. If you look at serial #s you will notice that UDU was made in 52 but most if not all UBU diesels were made in 54 looks like it took them a year to get the later engine into production. In 1956 they were labelled as UTSD Specials with G stlye front grill and cast rad bottom with steering piston running crossways like 5 Star ot M5. setup. UTSD-M were models with inline pump. Basically made from left over components from 1952-55. They used the older crankcase and drum brakes. I have one that has 108 prefix making it a 1958. Ihave a couple of 5 Stars that used inline pump setup the same as UTSD-M. [Reply]  [No Email]

I bought it from Original Owner's son that said it hadn't been changed. It appears that inline pumps were intended to export market, however, they were available from Bosch, so some may have been retrofitted. With MM there are always exceptions to most rules, as MM did many one off's & special builds. [Reply]  [No Email]

I've seed several others w/o PS too, have actually only seen 2 or 3 that did have power steering. They are one of my all time favorite MM tractors, they just look nice, & are that last of an era. Have seen about 25 U diesels and all have the rotary pump. I recently made a list of components required to convert to inline from rotary. 17 parts are required. Same components are used on 5 Star. So basically a inline pump could be added to M5,M602, or M670 with 336 motor. [Reply]  [No Email]

So, MM choose to introduce the new diesel engine with a limited production run of UTUs with the engine and called them UDUs. 30 were built which was enough for MM to learn that the 283 gas engine crank was not strong enough for the diesel version. Many (possibly all) UDUs were retro fitted with the heavier crank that came out in the later 283 diesels for the UBUs. [Reply]  [No Email]
