mmgirl,
Bob M is correct in his statement. I would add that you should check the voltage at the battery terminals, while the engine is running. The ideal voltage should be 14.2 volts at the battery. Some new regulators might charge 15.0 volts, but tractor regulators mostly never are set over 14.7 volts on a twelve volt system.

Take your meter and check for resistance from the "R" terminal(the left terminal when looking at the alternator rear) and the regulator #2 terminal; per Bob M"s advice. Make sure there is no resistance from the regulator case and the battery ground. Both tests should show no resistance. These are the two main reasons that 10DN Delco generators overcharge.

Take care.

How many volts on the battery when charging?

Assuming your batteries are in good shape AND the grounds at the regulator base and alternator frame are solid, check the wiring between the alternator and regulator. Pay close attention to the wire connecting the alternator "R" terminal and the regulator "2" terminal. If this wire is broken or has high resistance it can result in overcharging.

Quite possibly a ground problem. Poor ground at alternator or regulator will give the regulator a false low voltage and the regulator corrects for it thus overcharging. Check voltage drop from the bat- terminal to the frame, regulator, alternator, etc. Any kind of voltage reading between two points on the same side of the system (bat ground to frame, etc, or bat+ to switch, alt bat terminal, etc)indicates a bad connection. Your problem could also be in the wiring and can be tested in a similar way. Good luck.

Does it start OK or does it turn over slow? Could it be the battery?
