Hello Gentlemen,
I am new to MM's except for one my dad had in the fifties. A UTU,L.P.,single front, hydralics. I learned to drive it at about 8yrs old. It left the ranch about late 50's but that mm u has a place in my heart.
Well, its time to get serious about restoring a UTU. After looking for a while I may have settled on this one. Rough but all there except for battery box. The serial tags are rusted I ca'nt make out #'s however,I think if I take them off and buff them I think I will make out #'s Only # I can get so far is build date on propane tank of 1951.
A few pic's for your comments and opinions.
Thanks, Tony

I'll enclude few more pic's from today bringing her home. Wish I had more but my camera gave out.

Where is the location of this? I was just in California in April visiting in the Hanford & Tulare area. Went to the big antique show in Tulare.

55-50 Ron,
I wish I would of known you were at CAFE Show in April I was there with all my other restorations. I was parked with the group of I.H.'s on parade route I had the 560 parked on corner and had a SMTA on propane,400 gas, H with #8 plow and L.A.case on propane.
Hope you enjoyed your visit ,Sorry for the hot days of show.
To Answer your question of where this MM U was at:
It was with some other oldies along 99 Hiway in Pixley Ca . about 10-15 miles south of Calif Antique show grounds.
Best, Tony

Tony,

Did your Super MTA on propane have a single front wheel? Did your 400 have a single front wheel?
I took over a 100 photos of the Tulare parade and I think I've found all of your tractors (except the 560) in my photos. We were sitting right on the west side of the announce stand.

We had a wonderful visit. Interesting area of California. Saw lots of coastal CA during my Navy time but this was the first time in the central valley.

Yes, My SMTA is on propane ,single front also 400 single front ,gas. Both At Tulare.
Also, if you google Tulare tractor pull You may be able to pull up two videos of a exibition pull I did with the SMTA.

I would take her home with me in a heart beat if the numbers checked out for a UTN and the price is right $1000.00 give or take. I would try to get the lights of the U next to it so you would have the one for the right side, maybe even take whole thing home if it is reasonable just in case you need something like the grill if its in better shape then the left side of the UTN. Even the tool box looks good in the pic. Nice find don"t find to many like that here in the midwest.

This is its mate came from same ranch at estate sale.
This one has great serial tags.
tractor is 011480I975 & engine is model 2823A serial 0194804795. I think its a 1948 and hydraulics is bee gee pump instead of factory hyd. Dont like the rear wheels And narrow front . looks rougher close up.

If you can get a package deal on both, I would go for it - parts should interchange incl lights, carb, regulator, etc as well as rear wheels. If GE30J heads are good they are probably worth as much as second tractor. If 2 rib fronts are in decent shape, someone would want them.

To clarify - heads are probably worth scrap metal value for tractor - if you could get it for another $400-500 I would - but the dual fronts are not as rare as the single fronts - and in not-running condition, I would say the single front is $1000 tops - maybe more like $700-800 if free.

If the tags are rusted, its most likely a 1952. Tractors made during the Korean war had steel tags. I had a 52 UTE that was this way. I also have a 51 UTS that has an aluminum tag.

If I was looking for a rig like that , I d grab it fast. Very nice looking UTN.The sheet metal looks very good , not much bent . And it has an original style muffler , plus some cultivator and planter brackets on it. If you ever want to mount imp s , brackets are getting hard to find.
The tires look good in the pic s. If that frt. tire is ok , that is a plus, I had to buy one last fall, kind of costly. Go for it! clint

Better go for it! They aren't making any more of them!

Looks like a pretty straight old tractor to me...

Does the engine turn over?? That would be the single biggest thing I'd check...

Looks about right for a 51 - should be split heads most likely GE30J on casting if it was originally LP.

Single wheel makes it a UTN - a bit more rare / desirable - only 354 made 1950-52. S/N should start 03800102 to 03800204 if its a 1951 or 03800205 - 03800354 for a 52. A 1950 would be 0385000001-0385000101. Probably with a N suffix. Engine S/N will be 019500xxxx for a 1950 or 0190xxxx-0192xxxx for a 51-52

And most of the LP engines are cleaner inside - looks like sheetmetal is pretty solid and all there. When you get ready for front tire, look at any military surplus tire places - 9.00-10 NHS multi-rib (not 3 rib Ag - more likely 5 or 6 rib) used on Helicopters or Ground Support Equipment - I paid $10 for last one I bought locally - decent used - vs $200 new. Or give me a holler.

Hello Fellas,
Thank you for your comments and help in this decision .
I am meeting owner tomorrow at 10.am Calif. time and giving him a check.
Then trying to get tubes in tires just enough to hold air to get her home.( 65 miles South)
I'll be posting as we go along if you guys would like to follow progress.
I know I'll be needing help as I go along as I am mostly familiar with I.H. letter & hundred series.
Tony
