I have an M5 that sometimes when I put it in gear it goes and sometimes it won't I have to put the clutch in and take it out of gear and put it back in sometimes two or three times. when it goes it seems to stay in gear. What can I do?

Thanks Bob

pull the torque back makes them shift better

mostly I only use second and reverse and it happens in both. It is hard to get into first third and forth gears so I don't use them.

Thanks, Bob

Bob it sounds as if you have some serious problems in your transmission. It is hard to guess at what all is wrong.

Does this happen in all gears or just fourth?

My first thought,is that the shifter is worn on lower end and does not move the gear far enough to lock in place. Do not know if shifter is removable without removing trans cover. If so knob on lower end could be built up for tighter fit.

I agree, sounds like there is a lot of wear. I think all the "top" gears, 1st, 3rd, and 4th never did go in easy as there was so little travel of the shift lever compared to the "lower" gears. I have the same problem on my M5. It can be a bear to get it in gear somedays. You may be able to get the shift lever out without removing the transmission cover. That is where alot of the wear is sometimes. After I placed washers, shift lever spring and a new pin in mine (for a quick fix) it worked much better.
