I have a jet star three, and the brakes are terrible. I pulled the brake covers off, and fluid came pouring out. Would I correct in assuming it is leaking from the seals on the bull pinion shafts? Also, would this be trans fluid I am getting in there? Wondering because I am loosing hydraulic fluid as well, but I cannot locate a leak from higher up..tractor is quite used and has not been restored, so a full pressure wash may be in order, but anything to look for would be great. I am an ASE master auto tech by trade, so this is a bit different to me!Thanks, Ed |

| I had a JS3 once and did brakes. Yes, seals at bull pinion shafts. Can get those, using number off seal If I recall. Have to use a plastic bottle or sometthing similar on shaft to pass it over it, so as not to cut it up on shaft splines. I cut bottle, wrapped tight, then greased it to use. Once you pull brakes cover there is one disc, then pull the metal actuator assmebly, then another disc. The backing plate that is next opens to trans, so you may need to lower level of oil below that area. Good chance to drain and re-new if old tractor. Be careful of the thin metal shims on back of that plate, they give you bearing clearance. I had to remove one of mine to tighten the shaft up. Lots of bolting and unbolting to try each time. I left the seal out for those tests. Also the cover has three spacers over bolts that need to go in right order, think one is longer and has to be in right place. They have marks to identify on the spacers. sometimes the springs (3) on the actuator assembly are broken, and the bearings between them may need cleaning and greasing. If they are wet, maybe just clean up and grease. I never found new discs with proper spline centers, so had mine re-lined at a brake shop. They couldn"t put the grooves in them like orig, but said they never had to do those on other brands they covered and it worked fine. And they did work good! You really need to get a shop manual or the IT manual that covers all MM"s to go over this info and be able to re-read as you go. They have those manuals on this site for fair price. Good Luck. P.S., on old tele-flo"s lifts, the oil used to go thru the gear case, and a bad gasket below made it leak into the gear case. I think they re-routed those paths thru metal tubes on outside on the later series and won"t do that. Do you have the "lay-down" filter in front, or one under the foot platform? Check all the fittings and hoses, lots of them on these. I replaced my hoses and found some flare fittings kinda loose. There is a seperate book on the tele-flo repairs, hard to find, but I took mine to old MM mechanic to have rebuilt. Looked to hard for me. |

| I don't grease anything on those actuators. That invites them to stick after they get a little brake dust in the grease. |

| Thanks for the info guys. I do have a manual, it is the intertec manual, and covers 33 moline models. It is a good book, but rather vague in spots, especially on the jet star 3. It has the "lay down" filter in front, below the seat, nothing below the footboards. I replaced the brakes in this about 8 years ago (Dad"s Tractor) and they worked fine until this spring, but it has been sitting alot lately, and has now developed this mysterious hydraulic leak. There are a few metal tubes on the outside, one that goes from the pump up to near the filter, and rate and cycle valves. Is this gasket you are referring to underneath what would I guess be called the reservior/rockshaft assembly? It looks as if it bolts to the top of the differential/final drive assembly. I am trying to locate a picture to reference. I know I can take it apart and put it back together, I just want to know what pieces/parts I will need, and any "common" things I should look out for. Winter is coming and Dad wants his tractor! Thanks, Ed |
