Need information about Big Mo 500. What is the difference between a 500 and 600? What is the original color? Why would a Big Mo have an Oliver ID plate on the backhoe?

Early Big Mo 500 and all Big Mo 600 had 445/4 Star hood and dashboard. The Big Mo 600 was only made one year, 1960 I believe. It had the hydraulic shuttle also used on the Two Star and Motrac crawlers. I've only seen one Big Mo 600, it was equipped with Henry industrial loader and backhoe of unknown manufacture.

As mentioned previously, both BM 500 and BM 600 (and the crawlers) were built on 4 Star chassis, and both used 206 engine. I've heard some people say that the BM 600 must have been a real beast, (assuming by its larger number that it must be a larger tractor than the BM500) but it was larger in number only--basically same tractor.

The Big Mo 500 was made for several years and underwent a styling change after the first? production year. The new style incorporated a heavy cast grill and flat top hood and round gauges and tach similar to M-series farm tractors of same era (early to mid 60s) I've seen several of these cast front Big Mo 500, both as loader tractors with 3 pt and as tractor loader backhoes.

The HL500 forklift was built on a reversed Big Mo 500 tractor.

The Two Star crawler and Big Mo 600 were made in very limited numbers (prototype style) for one year only. The Motract crawler and Big Mo 500 were made in "rather large numbers", and incorporated some design improvements over their predecessors.

We had one at work in the early to mid 90's and it had the later M-M yellow with a silver chasis similar to what Massey Ferguson has. We have a Jet Star 3 Forklift that is a M-M factory model and that has the M-M yellow with the Dyna Brown chasis. Sometimes industrial tractors are ordered and painted the color the owner wanted it to be. You see a lot of industrial tractors in both yellow and orange. I have seen some painted light green similar to Deutz. I have seen a couple painted red also. So the only way to know for sure is to find where it was origionaly sold to and what color they used at the time. Or if it had not been sandblasted and repainted before you may find some samples of the origional color under the dash or hood. The backhoe may have been added later or switched at one time. I think they wer almost the same but I am not sure.

The 500 has a mechanical shuttle shift in it and the 600 has a hyrdaulic. there may be more than that but as far as i've read basically it. they have the same engine in them(206L-4). as for color i've seen pictures of indutrial yellow ones and prairie gold. go to www.minneapolis-moline.com and look around and post on that board and they have a picture of a big mo in the image gallery. hope this helps. email me if theres anything else u wanna know couse i have a big mo 500.

It probably has an Oliver backhoe on it. I have a book on the 510, 613, & 615 Oliver backhoes, they look very much like the MM hoes on the same tractors. The MM #s were B10, B13, B15, so they are apparently the same make. As for the difference and the correct paint, I'll have to let someone else answer those questions. John
