OK i have a MF40 and it stuck in Reverse. I didn't know the frequency of this happening, so I tried messing with it rocking, wiggling, yelling, even promised it a vacation but to no avail it just looked at me with that dumb grey look..
So I hit it and tried to pull it back up toward the steering wheel and "SNAP" It came off in my hand. (With that my wife took a few quick steps back cause I've been known to throw things that break/don't do what their supposed to do. And besides, the neighbor kids like finding stuff over in thier yards)
SO, How does one change out the shifter without taking the whole steering box/linkage out and off???
I've been told that it can be done through the filler hole.. :? Now I don't have big fingers but dont have girly hands either. I pulled the pin out and can pick it up with a vise-grip but can't seem to figure out what is holding it to the spring. And looking at the new shifter, I dont' see what the spring gets attached to.

Any help would be appreciated Errol[/b:170e3d82c1]

You've had quite a day. I'm assuming you have the three speed with hi/lo.
What you could have done through the filler hole is unlock the stuck linkage. There are numerous posts in the archives on how to do this. I've had to do it myself.
Unfurtunately I don't think you can change the shifter through the filler hole. There's a keeper on the end that keeps the spring in place. I had to lift the steering housing to change mine when I was restoring the tractor.
Good luck. I hope your day gets better.

Thanks Don; I popped it back in N when i had the trans cover off by hitting it with a crowbar. And yes it's a 3, +hi/lo.

I thought so. I'm thinking of just drilling a hole, and tapping, and installing a long bolt until I get the rest sorted out.

It looks these get stuck often. Is there another thing I can do to the new one before I install to not have this happen again?
I thought about milling a slot in the cover where I could use a smaller prybar to right any future problems.

Since it was stuck in R, I couldn't reach that side of the shifting linkage.

Thanks and when I get home from work, I'll print it up and study it.

There's a lot of wear in the linkages after that many years. The best advice I've seen is to allways apply a little down pressure on the shifter when changing gears. I still forget to do that sometimes.
I keep a small bar in my toolbox now to use to pry the forks when it gets locked up.

Also, shift straight into neutral, straight across and straight up or down into next gear. Don't try to shift diagonally.
