Regarding a 1976 Massey Ferguson 245 Diesel.

Is this the correct alternator for a tractor with serial #9A249349.

Since this tractor was purchased used, how can I be sure of the model year ?

The last alternator I put on a 245D was a left-over from a 1983 Chevy S-10, fits fine and has been good for over 8 years. Yes the pulley is smaller but it's always charged. On a 255D I bought a new one off of flea-bay, fit fine but I had to change the v belt a tad smaller, charges fine.

You didn't say if you have an alternator to match up? The alternators MF used those years were a very common one and were used on many makes and models of about everything. The pulleys on them were different and when getting a different alternator the pulley is moved to the replacement alternator. Pulley Nut is easily removed with a impact wrench. Cab tractors used a higher amp output alternator simply because of more to power up. Using a Higher output alternator than needed won't hurt a thing. If you have no cab then weather you put on a low or hi output alternator won,t really matter unless you plan to run something like a Air Planter with electric fans from this tractor. Any automotive parts store can fix you up unless the pulley they offer on it wont work for you and you don't have correct pulley.

I checked the notes from when I replaced the alternator on my 255. This is what I had:

579541M91
Delco #1102-920

(quoted from post at 19:55:41 01/11/22) Your tractor is a 1976 year model according to your serial number, and the parts book shows to use part number 773324M91 as a replacement.
This should be appropriate, correct ?

Yep, it will. Be advised it is made in china if that bothers you. I would think you could get one at a car parts store for around $65 or so?

Is it correct to say that any alternator with the same mounting holes and a minimum of 61A would be appropriate ?

Basically, yes. It may interest you to know that the Operators Manual for the 245 specifies that the alternator was 37 amps from the factory.

The parts book, which I expect has been updated more recently than the Operator's manual, shows # 773324M91 (Delco Remy #1105422, 63 amp), as ptfarmer posted, being the service replacement for the other Delco Remy alternators (including the lower amperage ones) used during production. It should be an easy match up as far as clocking at a parts store, at most one might need to swap the pulley from the old one to the replacement.
