Diff Lock Massey 175

I just re-did my right brake, and freed up the stuck diff lock while I had it apart. It was stuck locked on, so I always had the axles locked. I it only in the field, so I don't think anything was really harmed. I need a diff lock 101-

What's the best practice for using the rear diff lock? Should I engage it when stopped? Will I have to keep my foot on it the whole time while using it? How do I disengage it? I saw the spring in there that pulls it back, but once I lock it in, will it stay locked until I stop? I want to avoid damaging the rear diff

DO NOT apply it with one wheel spinning, and other stopped! It should NOT stay on by itself without your foot holding it down. It should be applied before you think it's needed, and it should release on it's own. It MIGHT need each brake tapped lightly, or steering turned slightly left/right to release IF it does stay applied. Years ago my boss had his 275 on his farm, and he wrecked the rear end. He had one wheel spinning and one stopped when he hit the pedal..

The lock on my 175 does not always release as it suppose to, so I pry or pull it up. It should stay locked without being held down until you release it.

The HYDRAULIC diff locks SHOULD stay on until manually turned off, or tapping one brake. The MECHANICAL diff locks SHOULD release soon as the pedal is released, BUT they
don't always until each brake is tapped. It's NOT designed to stay on with the pedal released like the MF hydraulic operated locks are.

It's been my experience with the 200 series if the Diff lock is engaged you can -barely- turn until it unlocks, it's very noticeable. Maybe yours was not fully engaged the whole time?
