DavidP South Wales MF85

Hi David and I hope you are ok. I am 76 years old and still run my small ag engineering buisness with one engineer repairing and servicing Manitou telescopic handlers and fork lift trucks. I left school in 1958 and went into the farm machinery trade in Newark in Nottinghamshire working in the parts department of J L Maltby ltd. There was 10 machinery dealers in Newark and one of my jobs was to go to other dealers picking up parts on the shop bike. On of the places was the MF dealer Windsor and Stevenson Ltd and one day when I went there all the workers were outside looking at a big new MF tactor that was going round the MF dealers for assesment. Would this have been a MF 85 tractor. MJ

Hello MJ thanks for your message. Hope you are managing to stay safe in these terrible times. The 85 and 95 were before my time a little. I was only 4 when you left school. In all probability it was an 85 that you saw. This would have been something really special by it's size, new paint scheme and almost unique in the UK at that time.
The period from around '53 to '60 was a time of great change in Massey, Harris and Ferguson history. Firstly the amalgamation of Massey an Harris then it becoming MHF, then MF and in the middle of that the acquisition of Frank Perkins. On top of that for the dealers there was the streamlining of the MH and Ferguson dealerships into one brand. Seems like it's been fairly quiet since other than Varity and AGCO.
I believe that the 85 put out around 68HP so would have been quite a step up from the approx 52 HP Mk 1 65 with the 192 engine.
Stay safe.

Thanks for your infomation, in the late 1950s every farmer round here had a Fordson Diesel Major and a little gray Fergie. One of the reasons I still come to work is because I repair older tractors for my customers and at the moment it is the Fergusons that is keeping me buisey. I have 18 tractors from 1923 to 1960 including a 1951 TED with a Ferguson mid mounted mower. MJ

Hello, once the passion is in the blood you can't remove it. Good for you if you are able to carry on with repairs. Probably like me you come from a time when we repaired things using our skill and ingenuity. Many things these days can only be repaired if there is a new unit sitting on the shelf.
