Massey ferguson 202 PTO

62massey

New User
I'm new to tractors. This is my first. It's a 1962 massey ferguson 202 work bull. PTO wont shift. Is there a procedure that must be done. Seems like when I bought it the guy showed me that it worked. I never needed it until this year and it won't shift forward or back. Does the engine need to be at a certain speed? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks MIKE

Hi Mike, the engine does not need to be
running to start. Is the lever movement
rock-solid to start or does it have a tiny
amount of movement? If it is solid then it
may be the lever spindle that is seized
through lack of use. If there is a tiny bit
of movement then the sliding gear may be
stuck on its carrier. Either way it would
be worth draining the oil and removing the
side cover so that you can check the
operation more closely.

Are your pushing the clutch all the way down while pulling the pto lever back for engine (live) pto. The pto lever all the way forward is ground pto.

Thanks for the info guys. The lever does move just not far enough. Also what does ground PTO mean? I'm new to tractors, Thanks

Some of the old implements worked with ground speed, live pto the pto turns 540 rpm, with ground pto, the pto turns according to the ground speed of the tractor which can be a lot slower than 540 rpms.
