This is my pilot when adjusting carb :P got the carb apart cleaned it really well then soaked it overnight. tonight went out to the shop and could'nt bellieve how dirty fluid was, I used new clean fluid for the overnight soak,it looked like coffee . Glad that guy's insist on the long soak. The last kit was put in a little too quick the only gasket was the middle one. The throttle butterfly was worn almost twice the size trottle rod, I think this might have added to my idle woes. Do you think that with my bad distrubuter and weak carb would that be why the crankshaft broke????

I don't think my throttle rod has any bend to it, can't see a reason why it would. The TO35 is definitely straight, I have it all apart right now to re-do all the ball joint connectors etc. The previous owner had it held together with tie wraps. It fell apart when I was testing it. Always wondered why it felt funny when throttling up/down.

I'm glad you have a good helper for out in the shop, I have a couple of barn cats who sometimes come into the shop when it's really cold out, and two Saint Bernards who like to "help".

Inno its amazing whats missing in the manuals,I have four differnt ones and they cover pretty much the same stuff, but also have holes in them that have me scratching my head . I guess they did'nt build many 202 ind so they just used the the basic manual from the MF-35 . Is the throttle rod suppost to have a slight bend in it the diagrams show just straight rod,Wonder if I should take it out to try to straighten it.

Half the battle with these old things, especially if you don't have access to manuals or are knowledgeable about them yourself, is finding the right information. I wouldn't be half as good at fixing mine if it weren't for the internet.

I am curious about the lack of compensating spring on the 202 and again I wonder what it's exact function is on tractors that do have it.

As for your friction disc, the hand throttle should have a detented piece that the hand throttle sits in to hold it in position which (in my opinion) would make the friction disc unnecessary.

Probably the best source for diagrams is acgopartsbooks.com

From there you click on "view books" to the right of Guest User. Then select Massey Ferguson from the pull down menu and type in your model. It will come up with the 202/203/204/205 listing on top. Click that and you have access to the entire parts list for your tractor complete with zoomable exploded views and part numbers for all the parts and most times you can make out in which order to re-assemble them. If you haven't already been there it's another one of those "why didn't I have this sooner" things.

Just had a look for the diagram and noticed something funny. The diagram which has the foot pedal does not seem to have a compensating spring at all.........strange! That may explain why my 202 didn't have one and didn't seem to need it, the governor worked fine without one.

Inno the fees were $5 under 50lb and $10 ,50lb to100lb all I had to pay is Gst because I was not in the U.S for 48 hours. I do not have good parts diagram for my 202 throttle under the dash where the cork washer would go,think I'm missing some pieces. Any chance you would have one??

Yeah, machine shop rates here are crazy!! Had a couple pins machined for my loader........he matched them perfectly and did a great job.......way better than was required. I was looking at around $500 or so if I recall correctly. Next time I'll just get the correct size stock and drill holes for pins and call it a day!

How much was it for brokerage fees to order parts that way?

When I worked at MF dealer years ago we set low idle on Continental gas engines at 500 RPM, and Perkins diesels at 750-800 RPM.

I'm assuming he means idle speed. Never heard of that causing problems before, might have to turn up the idle on mine.

So? Is Fred Bassette going to rebuild the carb? That's a hard job for someone who doesn't have fingers. I don't remember you having a broken crankshaft? Or is this a 'dog tale'?

Hey TONY thats what started my trip into tractor restoration.Used the tractor for the summer then the first snow fall I use it to clear the driveway .I heard a really rattle coming from top engine so I shut it down.I called a friend he said it maybe just carbon build-up on top of pistons so I pulled the head and the pistons were pretty clean, the only thing I could see is #2 piston was a little shiny like cresent moon where it had hit the head. Next the oil pan I did'nt see anything until I rotaded the crank, it was a tiny little crack as I moved it further I could see it was broken.I called a couple of places and they wanted $2800 to $4600 plus the cost of crank to rebuild,if they could find a crank. Well needing the tractor I learned how to use the internet and ordered the rebuild kit with crank fromYT. When I ran into some problems?questions the guys at YT told me about the massey forums, wish I new about them sooner might have saved a lot of mistakes!!! Oh well live to learn

So Matt! Did you get parts thru YT here? Do they ship to Canada now? Or is Alberta now part of the states?? ... yikes, that's not good either...
My crank was slightly bent, so another 50 bucks when turned down... but that was because of the inserts riding on top of each other.
$4,600? Four thousand... six hundred ....dollars????? !!!!!! Yep, you're still in Canada alright...
but then again, $1000 to 1500 in parts, 100 an hour in a classy shop... taking a man most part of a week... I suppose...

Tony I got the parts from YT then had them sent to a broker in sweetgrass Montanna. Its about 3hr round trip from my place.Just bought tune-up parts points, cond, plugs, cap and rotor for $83. I see on the site for $24 or so.Carb kit was $44 and no new throttle shaft. Napa says they can't get the right kit. Inno suggested sparex in edmonton I'll give them a call. BTW

I want to open a repair shop and motel in Sweetgrass, and another in Milk River.... immagine breaking down there? Or getting stranded at the border for paperwork? What a lonesome place to be in a pickle...

The most common reason for broken crankshafts is too slow a
tickover, especially so on diesels. The Masseys are factory set to
idle at around 750 revs but a lot of users turn them down to about
550 RPM.

Sam what do you mean a (tickover)slow turning when starting motor? I thought the timing was off the injectors and such.
