i have to disagree, in the 555 much like the JD R i believe the diesel was more common.

Not here. Diesel tractors didn't really take over til the sixties here. The extra cost of the diesel engine was a big factor. And there was not a big cost savings in fuel considering there was only a few cents a gallon difference in fuel price between gas and diesel. Starting in the winter was a factor too. Theres a lot more JD AR tractors than Rs around here. The 60 and 70 as well as the720 were usually found with gas engines under the hood.
