The hydraulic cover plate to my to35 cracked, it has happened 2 times. All I was doing was raising a scraper and it didn't stop. I heard a loud pop, and it had split the top cover in half. As I have searched for another cover I have found lots of to35 top covers that are cracked.I don't know if it is a linkage problem, or defective pressure relief valves, but it seems to be a problem with the to35. I'm still looking for a new cover if anyone has one.

I may have the cover that you need. I have a cover that is on a TO-35 and a Massey 50.

It is also possible that it was damaged by an implement bouncing when the tractor is in motion with the lift in the upward position. Apparently that is very hard on the cylinder and upper cover.

If the stops are adjusted correctly it should never get high enough to cause damage and even if it does, the relief valve should open to prevent any damage.

I cracked the cyl in my 202 after rebuilding the pump because I didn't replace the relief valve. I put in a new cylinder and a new relief valve and all is good. According to instructions/advice I have seen from John (UK) you should raise the draft control lever and the position lever occasionally to fire off the relief valve to make sure it doesn't get gummed up and not work when it's needed.

In the earlier TO20/TO30 lift system the piston coming out of the cylinder would push on the control valve linkage which would stop the lift arms from coming all the way up. The lift system in the TO35 (and MF35, F40, MH50, MF50 etc) can allow the lift arms to go all the way up until the piston ram jams against the casting if the internal linkage or external quadrant stop is not adjusted correctly. If the relief valve is clogged or blows at to high a pressure when the lift tops out, the top cover and/or piston will break. I have done this on an MF50 but luckily only my cylinder broke which is much cheaper to replace than the entire top cover. When you get another top cover be sure and replace your relief valve and go through all the linkage adjustments. John UK over on the Ferguson forum can send you instructions on how to properly adjust things. Also, make sure your cylinder bolts and the top cover bolts are torqued correctly when installed.

I had visited with John after the 1st cover cracked, and he sent all the needed information for setup. When I replaced the cover I also replaced the cylinder and piston, as well as had the pump rebuilt and a new pressure relief valve installed. Everything was setup as per John's instructions. It worked fine for just over 1 year when it broke again. There should be some way to stop it before it can break that cover again. A local hydraulic shop suggested finding the position of the piston when the lift is raised, and then drill a hole in the cylinder, so if the piston goes past that point, the hydraulic oil will blow by and stop raising the lift and keep it from causing the piston to jam and break things.

That makes sense about drilling a hole butt you shouldn't have to the linkage must be off some for the piston to go out that far.
