toddol1971 09-12-2012 18:12:03 206.125.131.81 Report to Moderator	my massey 65 g176 continental is slowly getting hot. It can idle all day just fine, but start bushhogging and the temp goes up. It has even died a time or two. Here is the things I"ve done so far. I had the rad cleaned about 10 years ago. Maybe 800 hrs since. change antifreeze every 3 or 4 yrs. New water pump 6 yrs ago. flushed out system 3 times last month and took the t-stat out. it still gets hot. I changed the spark plugs and while out I looked in the holes and the piston and cylinder look gunky. No water that I could see. no water in oil and no oil in water. I did a comp test 175/175/154/175. I pulled the fan and straightened the blades (they weren"t really that bad, I figured what the heck worth a shot). . New rad hoses. The only thing I haven"t done is check the timing. I need to do it. which way advances it? cw or ccw? So, what do youns think? Any ideas? Thank You. [Reply]   [No Email]

I found the dist tightening bolt stripped out and wouldnt tighten. I replaced this and adjusted timing by ear. I bushhogged for 2 hrs and it never got above 195. Without the thermostat the water doesn't stay in the radiator long enough to cool down. As far as the timing just pull the distributor cap and watch which way the rotor turns. I'm pretty sure cw is advancing cause it raises rpms. Last night I was real tired so I didnt wright everything. I pulled the t-stat to see if it worked. It worked fine. (Im assuming you know how I tested it.) I'm not insulting your intelligence but the opposite is true. Taking out the t-stat will make the engine run cooler, well its suppose to. It just didnt in my case cause there is a problem. By not having a t-stat the water is flowing freely thru the rad constantly cooling down the h2glycol. This is if you have a properly working cooling system. Installing the stat causes the water to stop flowing enough to build back up the heat. With out a t-stat or even to cool of a t-stat can cause motor to run rich which leads to carbon fouling of the cylinder, valves and plugs. I know running your timing to retarted will or can cause the same thing and even overheat. These last 2 or 3 things may be whats wrong with mine. I'm gonna check timing and see where its at. I just got my timing lite. I'll report back. I started to post this the other day, or even a week ago, but had a family issue so I'm finally getting to it. Thanks for all your help.
