My son in law and I recently acquired a used MF 231 and it is great. I have no manual so dont know on the shifter how to shift into proper speed of the PTO. Now it turns so slow that the weeds only get pushed over. lets say I am in 2nd gear and low range and push the PTO shifter farward; the PTO drive turns like 20 rpm. A friend said to pull up on the shifter?? To get more rpm's Did not work for me. Thanks ASC

"The clutch pedal must be pushed all the way to the bottom to disengage the engine pto."

Also there should be a 'mark' on your RPM gauge that shows '540' which is the correct speed for a rotary cutter... (if your RPM gauge doesn't work, you really need to get that fixed)...

Once the cutter is up to speed, you can mow in any gear that gives good cutting results... slower for really tall, thick, tough cutting, faster for grasses and smaller weeds... Bumpy is also an issue (for me anyway)... Going too fast results in physical aches and pains... :)

moving lever forward is ground drive pto, say for a mounted hay rake. Pull back on pto lever and it will be engine driven, use that for mowing and pretty much anything else. It will shift best if idled down all the way, don't force it if it grinds slightly. It just needs the clutch adjusted if it does grind, no biggy.

Thanks to all who gave advice. I will try this weekend. I feel real good about the 231 now.
