I just rescued a MF 85 gas burner from going across the scales as scap metal. I did so because the tractor was complete with great sheet metal. The tractor has a dual exhaust with 2 mufflers (one coming out of each end of manifold). I have found very little information on MF85"s. I plan a complete restoration. Can someone point me to a person who know a bit about these old tractors?

Thanks Dave. I"ve saved your number and will keep you in mind when I start restoring in a couple months. The one item I"m having difficulty finding is the front weight bracket (bumper). Do you have one?

Hi, When the 85's were new, they had lot's of
problems, but over time with updates they became
a very good tractor. Early had 223 ci Continental
and later the 242 ci. I don't understand the dual
exhaust-someones invention. The manifolds had two
outlets so a muffler could be mtd upright or horizontal, also for attach. such as mtd pickers.
I have an extra new op man.(orig.color) if needed
reasonable. They also were sold as standard or hi
arch. weight approx 4800 lbs w/o fluid in tires.
The 85 has approx 10 ft turning radius(w/brakes)
and farmers loved that part. Chuck

Chuck: I just parked this one in the barn until I have time to start restoring, but I did take a closer look at it this weekend. The serial # shows it to be a 1959 model (802006). The engine cast # is E223E600, but the exhaust maifold cast # is E242E(or D)600. Does this mean someone has added the exhaust maifold off a later Continental E242 engine on the original E223 engine. Also, the exahust mainfold has symetrical ports out each end. Attached to each end are cast elbows that turn up for the mufflers to attach too (i.e., the dual exhaust). Each elbow is a mirror image of the other and are both definitely factor cast elbows. How would I find out the vintage/history of this. I've not seen any indication of a MF85 or any MF having a dual exhaust option (or even a OEM/aftermarket exhaust elbow for dual exhaust). I can send pictures if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer. Mine is the high row crop model. The first thing I need to do is overhaul the engine. The folks were junking it because it used so much oil. Looking for a source for an overall kit and a good shop manual.

Using a lot of oil could be as simple as bad valve guide seals or sticking ring or broken rings. First thing I would do is this. Fill the cylinders with ATF and let it sit 3 or 4 days. Be sure to put the plugs back in. Then after the 3 or 4 days pull the plugs spin it over to clear the ATF out and fire it up and see how bad it smokes. If very little smoke then could also be a leak. Seen more then one like that where they would over fill it with oil and have problems also

Will give it a try. Out of curosity, what does letting the ATF stand for a few days do. I"ve poured ATF down carburetors while running to clean out carbon deposits, but haven"t tried letting it sit in the clyinders.

Letting it sit a few days in the cylinders free up sticking rings and also soften up carbon deposits so they end up being blown out the exhaust so that in turn frees you valves and makes them seal better
