It's me again. Is there an adjusment screw or a way adjust the starter drive on the starter motor so that it contacts the ring gear better?

Hi,
On UK Lucas 'M' series starters there is an adjustment to ensure correct engagement with the flywheel. In the photo it is the slotted screw with the locknut next to the starter mounting stud. It is an eccentric for the solenoid/pinion lever.

Sounds like a worn spot on ring gear as engine mostly stops in same spot. To confirm turn engine slightly with fan a little while pushing on slack side of belt, only need to turn crank pulley about 1 inch to get starter to mesh in a differrent spot. If starter works OK then ring gear probably needs replaced if starter drive gear is good.

A couple weeks ago I rebuilt a couple starters, and the 65 didn't want to engage- I thought I messed up the rebuild, but it was a bit of dirt as big as a grain of sand that was aiming the casing at angle it seems. Because after cleaing the whole area well, making double certain the starter case was tight and level to the housing, everything was fine.
