We had a te20 and a to30,the 30 for 50 years and never cracked the block on either one. Probably the 2 causes of cracked blocks would be working the tractor too hard and having it overheat or not a strong enuf mix of anti freeze.

We ran our tractors steady but not hard, mabe about 1700 rpm.

The castings are prety thin and as Steve said, overheating or lack of proper antifreeze solution are the most likely causes .Once they get a crack, it propgates down the cylinder separation. I had a TO-30 that had a block repair with tension rods that seemed to work just fine. No leaks of coolant into the pan.

You drill through the water jacket between the cylinders about 1-2 inches below the deck, and place a small threaded rod through the hole with a couple of nuts on each end.You tighten the nuts to tension the rod and pull the sides of the block inward to close the crack. As I understand it, this was a factory authorized repair procedure.

The remanufactured engine in my TO-30 uses a furnace brazing procedure which closes the cracks and incidentally stress relieves the block. It is then line bored rebuilt. It"s amore moder technique but takes apecial equipment to do.

i have a to-30 that i'm rebuilding and i'm getting told by ferguson dealer's that between the cyclinder the wall is thin and there noted for that. z129 is harder to find than z134s
