Dumb question about 3 point system

I have perhaps a rather dumb question about the 3 point system on my Massey 165. How do you keep the implement your toting from swaying back and forth? I try and use a bush hog or a plow and it swings from side to side and doesn"t tow straight. I have tried different chain arrangements and lengths but they either limit my vertical travel or are so loose that they don"t help the problem. What am I doing wrong? Is this a problem that you just deal with or am I not setting my chains correctly? Looking at my chain arrangement vs. other Masseys I"ve seen, it looks identical to what they run. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

That's what 3 pt. stabilizers are for. A dealer or tractor supply should have them or be able to get them. Not all implements require them though. Dave

You need to find yourself some "stablizer bars" for your 165. Try to find a tractor with them on and then look to see what you need. OEM will be the best and you will have to call several salvage yards to get everything that you need. One will get you by but two is best.

Hi,
The photo shows the type of stabilizer chains fitted to UK 165"s etc after late 1971. It comprises of a left and right hand threaded rods which screw into a weighted turn-buckle. Even if your 165 is earlier this type should fit OK. There are two other MF types comprising of a flat bar with two holes which locate on the bracket pin under the axle and either onto the implement linkage pin or an extra pin on the rear end of the lift arm. The other common type is an adjustable one as the one above. It is essential that the connection point under the axle is on the same centre line as the lift arm pivot pins so that the linkage will not tighten and loosen as it is raised and lowered.

like others said get some stabilizer bars BUT YOU NEVER USE THEM WITH A PLOW just let it swing and if it is set right it will track right

Yeah, it's never been an issue when actually plowing but when I go to turn, it swings almost seemingly out of control from one extent to the other. It was really a big issue when I was using a rototiller. It was ridiculous how badly it was jumping and swinging around. Using a Bush Hog is not a joyous endeavor either, swinging from side to side when I get into the heavy stuff. I will definitely get some stabilizer bars. Thanks for all the replies and the picture.

The brackets for the cheap ones at TSC will bolt up to your 165. The bars that come with the kit don't seem quite right though. They do sell an adjustable bar that would probably work better. They just cost a little more too.

Eww! I can remember those horribly feeble outer check chains on our MF 168. Not one of Massey's better ideas were they? You had to keep those threads oiled constantly or they would seize solid. I remember consigning ours to the scrap bin and getting some better ones from somewhere . But even worse was that chain lift pick-up-hitch!
