hello.i have recently rebuilt a 165 with the perkins diesel.upon trying the first start up.it just wouldnt start.(it does turn over).i blead the lines and even tried a little starting fluid.but it just wouldnt fire.i removed the valve cover to check the cam timming it was good.i have good compression.so i checked the injector pump timming.and acording to the book the letter b on the pump should line up with the bottom ear of snap ring on pump at 26 degrees before tdc.mine is setting more in between the ears.and the adjustments that the pump has is not enough to get the mark where it needs to be.is the snap ring floatable or in a fixed position.or is this out enough to even matter.im sure i timed the gears properly.and i might have not been patient enough when bleeding.but it stumped me when it wouldnt even hit on starting fluid.sorry for the long question.i would greatly appretiate anyones help |

| Hello, First thing to do is mentally go over the timing of the gears. If the engine is turning smoothly it lookes like you got them right! Set the flywheel or wyway on the crank sprocket to TDC on the number 1 firing stroke. Both valves should be fully closed. If they are rocking you are on the wrong stroke. Even if the pump markings are a couple of degrees out you should at least get smoke up. The ring is fixed so if you cannot align the mark the timing may well be out. If you have to check it you will need to reset it unless you have the patience to keep turning until it lines up. Assuming that the fuel pump has not been overhauled it is not uncommon to have to tow the tractor to get smoke up and eventually start. Slightly higer cranking speed makes a difference. Slacken at least two injector nuts off and turn the engine until you see fuel dripping/spitting out. Tighten up and you should at least get smoke at next try. Try not to use starting fluid.DavidP |

| thanks david for your quick response.i checked the rocker arms and # one has slack under both arms while # four is in between cycle on exhaust and intake.is this correct.i am getting white smoke.the pump hasnt been rebuilt but the injectors have.i have checked this at least a half a dozen times in the past few days.and i have blead the lines at the injectors.the mark is looking like it is probaly lining up with the flywheel more like 28-30 degrees before tdc.your fixin to tell me some bad news aint you |

| Hello, It is only number one cylinder that observations are taken from. If you are getting some smoke then at least its trying to start albeit with the timing out perhaps. What I think may have happened is that one or more of the gears may be one or two teeth out. The only way to be sure is to remove the cover and reset the marks. The annoying thing is that you will not know if they were wrong until you try to start it again. But you WILL have the satisfaction of knowing that they are correct NOW. When the gears are correct then if it does not start its not going to be a timing issue. As mentioned in my other post we have had instances where we failed to start after a rebuild where the pump was not overhauled and had to tow to start. Avoid using a chain though. Cheers DavidP |
