Hello All,

I have some of questions about the distributor on a 1969 MF135 Perkins gas motor. First, the gear broke on my distributor shaft so I ordered a rebuild one. I measured the diameters and they are the same as my old one. But measuring up from the bottom of the gear up to where the matting flange it is about .125 longer on the rebuilt distributor. I’m not sure if the shaft was pushed up into the distributor housing on my old distributor. Should I worry about that? The place were I bought it said it’s the right one. But the part numbers have been ground off.

Second, does anybody now how to remove the distributor drive gear that is inside the timing cover? Do I need a gear puller?

Third, should the distributor drive shaft just pull out once the bolt is removed that holds it to the thrust washer on the other side of the shaft? I thought I could just remove the shaft and gear in one piece but it wouldn’t slide out. It moves about ½ inch and gets hung up.

Finally, as you can guess I lost my timing when the distributor broke. I lined up all the timing marks on the timing gears and looked at the timing marks on the flywheel. Even though the timing mark indictor is missing it looks the timing is set around 12 degrees BTDC. I’m guessing if I align my distributor so that the points just close I’ll be pretty close. Anybody have any suggestions? If anybody has a picture of where the timing indicator should be it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the long list of questions in advance. I bought that IT service manual but it lacking any detail, at all! I can even find torque specifications in it.

Hi Bill, I had my dist out and also removed the housing from the rear of the timing cover. I did have the whole motor apart. On these pictures you can see the dist housing, the three bolts that hold the small cover on the end, I took that cover off. Removed a bolt from the end of the shaft, then the three bolts that hold the housing on the timing cover. The housing will slide off the back, and the shaft should stay there, if the timing cover is off on the front, you could then pull the gear and shaft out fron the front as a set. The big nut comes off, then you can take the gear off of the shaft. Also there is a photo with the timing cover just pulled off and still has the centrifigul governor cup and balls in it. Sorry I dont have any photos of it when the gear was actually out. But you shouldnt need a puller, it should come out easily. Do you really need to take all that apart? Good luck, TB

I dont recall the shaft and gear hanging up when I pulled them out, but my center idler gear was off by then, and it seemed to come right out. TB

TB, I thought that the distributor housing should slide off to. I managed to out about a 1/2 inch then it hangs up. I am wondering if there is something from the broken distributor in there. I'm going to try again. Sorry for the delay, I was out of pocket for a while. Thanks for the pics.

The part numbers have been ground off? How does the place know it's the right part with no part number? Get an MF manual, they are much better. Dave

I gave them the part number off the distributor. I just don't know why they removed the part number.
