MF 1080 history and problems

My dad bought a massey ferguson 1080 about 2 years ago. The tractor was local and sounded good. The tach and RPM's don't work becuase their was confusion to whether the tractor came with a alternator or not. We decided to leave it alone because the engine seems to be alright. Dad just said if it works dont fix it! haha but Believe it or not we asked 2 dealers and they each told us something different regarding the alternator. The engine sounds great. Best sounding tractor if you ask me. Lots of weight for tillage and power to run the baler. What I dont understand is why the 1080 has such a bad rep? i know we havent had ours that long but while we have had ours it has been a great tractor. the perkins engines are supposed to be good. idk feel free to help me out.

Our 1080 arrived at the farm in 1978. Been running since with the exception of a few things. The hydraulic pump was replaced in the mid 1980's. We also replaced the engine after a crack was found between the sleeves about 7 years ago. Local dealer located a 318 in a combine and made the swap. Other than that, tires once all the way around and one alternator rebuild. Batteries every 3 or 4 years.

The 1080 tac was driven off the end of the alt. The alt had a little speed reduction thingy on the back of it for the tac cable to screw into. The 1080 wasn"t a bad machine, Massey still hadn"t figured out that hydraulics were important and, yes, for some reason there were some engines that developed a crack between cyls. I have been surprised at that because I have always had high regard for the Perkins engine. If you run it at heavy pulling loads at quite slow speeds, say under 4 MPH or so you will fatigue the rear end. (C+P).

Our 1080 has been an OK tractor but not great. Ours has 7000 hrs. on the clock and had the engine overhauled twice. First time it needed it and the mechanice had the crank balancer off one tooth when he put it back together. The only way we knew it was, it had a very bad vibration @ 1500 RPM. Second time it was self induced and wont go into that. Basiclly it is a good tractor with limitations. 1. Week final drives, heavy 3pt loads will take out the planetatry faster than you can imagine. 2. Hydraulics are OK but if you have a 11XX series Massey you will hate them. Mainly because not having the float option. 3. It is a fairly large tractor and you want to do more than the engine has HP for. Frustrating when you are used to say an 1100 or 1130. Ours has been on our yard since 73 and is now a loader tractor, it has served us well but know it's limitations and use it accordingly.

I've used mine on a 4/14 kniverland plow in clay many times, have not had any rear end problems, replaces main hyd pump, couplers, clutch, front end, put a 1105 front on it, water pump, alt, brakes, one drive end as a previous owner had broken off the three point lower link mount, and put Michlien rubber on it and steel weights. works fine easy on fuel, also installed a 595 buhel loader on it.

i guess it sounds like it has some obvious problems. It sounds like a matter of time before ours has some issues.
