Diesel fuel leaking into engine oil again

Hi Folks,

I have a MF 135 UK Model with the 3 cylinder Perkins diesel. It appears that the diesel fuel is leaking into the engine oil pan again. I had this problem last winter and over the summer I replaced the fuel pump. This seemed to solve the problem, but now the engine oil level is going up again when I use the tractor for snowblowing.

Here in West Quebec in Canada the MF135 is essential to keep our driveway blown out so I cannot replace the fuel pump over winter. The big question is will I do any damage to the engine by running it with diesel in the oil? When the oil level gets over the maximum mark I usually drain off about a quart and then put a quart of new oil back in.

Is there any other way that the diesel could be leaking into the oil pan?

Many thanks for any advice,
Richard

Richard the deisel fuel will eventually dilute the engine oil enough to cause problems. You certainly would not want to ruin the bearings and crankshaft in your engine.I would not run it this way.The injector pump could have a seal leaking fuel into the crankcase or the small primary lift pump could have a leaking diaphram causing this also.

The other guys are right, the front seal in the injection pump will be leaking. Don't run your engine with diluted engine oil, if you have to use it before you have the seal replaced, change the oil first. Oil is cheap compared to an engine rebuild.

The guys below have steered you right. Either a bad diaphram in the lift pump, or the injector pump seal. You will ruin the engine if you continue your stated practice of draining down and replacing one quart of oil. This practice will continue to dilute the engine oil more and more each time you do it until you will ruin bearings/crank/cam/mains, etc which will cost you thousands to repair. Better solve the leaking and fix now. Tom

Thanks to all those who responded. It seems pretty unanimous to not keep using the tractor, but the problem is with the temperature here today of -20 degrees and no heated garage the repair won't likely happen until springtime. I guess I will be changing the oil a couple of times unless we don't get more snow.

I had replaced the lift pump already this summer and unless it is a faulty lift pump or poor quality replacement I will need to look at the injector pump. How big of a job is it to replace the injector pump seal? Is this something I can do myself or am I looking at having it done by a shop that rebuilds injector pumps?

Cheers,
Richard

I'd take a look at the injectors. We had a similar problem on a Massey 760 combine, and we replaced all that and found that a tip off an injector came off and was just pumping diesel into that one cylinder nonstop filling the oilpan.
