g mccool 12-25-2008 09:14:09 207.189.225.67 Report to Moderator	I plan to restore a pedal tractor. Has anyone ever installed new pedal tractor tires on old rims. Do you need a special lubricant? Do you warm them up in hot water before installation. What about on the front wheels that are plastic. Any problems cracking the wheels when installing tires. Can I save the old tires when I take them off or do I have to cut them off or are they usually hard & brittle & pretty well junk when you get them off. Any ideas??? Gerald [Reply]   [No Email]

Gerald The new tires (made recently) can be heated in your oven at 450 degrees for 15 minutes. Gloves will be required to handle them, work them to make them pliable and spray some soapy water around the wheel and inside the tire to ease sliding them on. I heat water in an old propane fish cooker with an iron pot. never had any trouble cracking or anything else. Get them warm enough to be "pliable" usually hot enough you can"t quite handle them without a pair of glove. Biggest thing to watch is that in the iron pot, keep them floating, or suspended. Don"t let them rest on the metal. P.S. the rears are easier than the fronts, but same method works.   [Reply]  [No Email]
