4020 Gas Carb

Been lurking for awhile but never posted. Had a good experience with a wanted add so figured I would throw this out there. Mostly work on 2 cylinders but had a friend in need so helped with a 4020 gas that wouldn?t run right. I have seen a few posts on here with similar concerns in the past. With some research we discovered that they may have been over carbuatored from the factory, so we tried something. Took a carb off a 1650 Oliver. We had to fab some adapters to get it on there as the bolt spacing was about 1/2? different. We were concerned about throat but turns out the 4020 carb was bigger than intake manifold and this carb matched perfect.

We asked a few folks first. His neighbor who works on quite a few new gens said it would never work, if it did it would fall on its face when you needed it. First time out they tried to pull stumps and it spun the cast centers in the wheels. Good enough for us.

What would you expect the results will be: better throttle response; better fuel economy; and a small drop in maximum HP?

Post back more as you use the tractor. I would have said that carb is to small but if it works you could make some side income making adapters. There is also a person who makes them fuel injected but the price is more than a diesel engine. I have a 4020 gas here but my solution to the problem is the diesel engine I bought. Maybe next winter I can rebuild and install it. Tom

Yea I would like to see the fuel injection system in use but it?s like $4000, I wonder how many of those kits they have sold?

I have heard people say that a carb of a 706 International is also an option. The Zenith option is not cheap. The 4cyl ran fine but the 4000/4020 gas engines were not up to par for JD.I have had a couple 4000 and one early low houed 4020 and I fiqured out why everyone was looking for a cure. Your plate looks very well done.

This tractor was original equipped with M/S carb. The owner had pulled apart, cleaned, replaced parts and made multiple attempts at adjustment with little to no improvement in performance. Finding a new or remanned Zenith would have been an option, but they are pretty pricey. Especially if you don?t have a core. He picked up this carb for around $100 and with a few pieces of hardware and an afternoon in the shop we had it going.

I did this work about 2 years ago. The tractor mostly gets used for mowing, bush hogging, and general cleanup. It might make a little less power, but it isn?t noticeable for his uses. What is noticeable is that it isn?t fouling plugs and blowing smoke like it did with the M/S on it. He has not had it off or had to make an adjustment since we put it on.

If I remember the only change we made besides the adapters is I took the linkage plate off the old M/S throttle shaft and put it on the new one. Then the linkages hooked right up.

Great job. I have using a 4020 gas since 2000 to hay and feed in the winter. Mine have the MS carb which I completely rebuilt when I got it, not just a inexpensive carb kit but a complete rebuild including throttle shift seals and bearings. I have found the secret to plug life is not let it set and idle. I know it that big Six will idle smooth at 400 RPM, but don't do it, keep it at a least 800 RPM, or better yet shut it off. Just my theory but I believe the MS carb's vacuum operated accelerator operates at low RPM.

I run a allis 190 carb on my 3020 gas.. easy to rebuild and set up and runs great.. fortunate that it will bolt rght on without making special plates.. good luck
