Just a couple questions on JD 4020,s . Basically need to know what year it is. What year did they go to the high intake manifold as apposed to low with runners reaching upwards ? This tractor has the front , horizontally mounted injector pump and power shift and looks like deep oil pan. Would this also be a console tractor? Only have two pics , one of ea side but can't see where console would be. 38 rears. Thanks in advance.

We need to see picture. The higher intake was on 71/72 . The injection pump throws me as they were all upright on right side of engine. Deeper oil pan had increased capacity in 1969/72 and held 12 quarts versus 8 not including filter but not that noticable. The console is very evident on right hand side by fender. The serial number breaks are 222142[1969] 24999[1970]26079[1971] and 270288 [ 1972] those are last ones of each year. What I assume you are looking at is a combine repower possibly with M&W aluminum pan[worth $1K] . The 4320s had the front horizontal injection pump. the 38 in rubber was available in 71/72 but many have switched the earlier ones as the 34s cost about the same and 38 give more speed and higher 3 pt lift.If it is a power shift too bad is doesn't have correct motor as even though exact number is not known they bring a premium.

OK. Thanks to both of you for your info. Al B nailed it as to why I questioned it to begin with. Things just didn't add up. Yes, Al, it is the exact one on CL that you are alluding to. Things just weren't adding up as to what I know about the 4020,s. I'm by far , NOT an expert on them , but certain "flags" were flying on this one. Whenever you see a late 4020 D in good shape for $ 7500....well, one just starts lookin' a little closer. I realize it needs rubber but they still don't go that cheap around here. Thanks again. Not sayin' it might not be a good tractor but not worth what it would be with the correct engine. Thanks again guys.
