4020 Air Cleaner Question

I was looking at a bunch of pictures of JD 4020's, and noticed that some have an air cleaner stack protruding vertically through the hood, while others do not have this. Where is the air intake on those without a stack, and why do some have it and some not?

Thanks!!

The precleaner was optional equipment. The air cleaner inlet was below the hood on those not equipped.

It would seem that later 4020s with the oval muffler are more commonly seen without the precleaner, at least in my neighborhood.

Air pre-cleaner above hood was an option when tractor was ordered from factory when new. Air cleaner housing is located in same location under hood wit or without pre-cleaner.

Yes it was an option, but most all pre-console
tractors had them.
Some console tractors had pre-cleaners on the filters
below the hood.

As previously stated, the external pre-cleaners were an option.

For the tractors not equipped with an external pre-cleaner, the air enters the air cleaner assy. through slots cut in the perimeter of the housing itself.

While the lack of an external pre-cleaner along with the narrower oval muffler definitely improves the operator's field of view, the trade-off is increased air filter maintenance frequency in dusty conditions - in my experience......

I agree with you about the toy set but if you have any original Deere sales brochures they show lots of early 3020-4020 tractors without the air cleaners thru the hood. In all my years of buying and selling I do not remember ever seeing an early 3020-4020 without the air cleaner stack. Even all the 2510's I have owned had it as well. Tom

I wish I had the original brochure for these tractors . I do have a full line catalog for the 3010 4010 it doesn?t even have the 5010 in it but it does have the 8010

Glen the slots that you speck of were not used till 1969 models and then only on tractors that came from the factory with out the air stack

The upright airstack was an option on 69/72 models. Some were added such as on the 4320 and also the 6000 sprayer as people thought they got cleaner air. Most collectors prefer just the muffler which makes a cleaner look.

D the filter that you refurred to is mounted on the top of the air cleaner on the out let pipe and the pipe to the carb it is a safty filter in case the larger one in the can gets a hole

Yep, I'm aware of that.

The O.P. asked where the non pre-cleaner models drew their air from which is why I mentioned the slots.

We have a '72 4020 that is configured as such........
