4020 Charging

ASSUMING this is a diesel with a 24 Volt starter?

"Is it possible to have 2 12 volt batteries hooked in series and use a 12 volt alternator on 1965 4020 ?"

Connecting two 12 Volt batteries in SERIES gives you 24 Volts, which you can't charge with a 12 Volt alternator.

An option would be to install a 12 Volt starter and alternator and connect the batteries in PARALLEL, which has been done many times.

An EXOTIC option used by older semi tracks and some industrial equipment would be to install and wire up a series-parallel switch, which connects the batteries in series for cranking @ 24 Volts, then drops out and connects the batteries in PARALLEL for charging by a 12 Volt alternator.

So, to go back to the beginning, what issue are you trying to correct?
