On the 1967 4020 I am working on there is a sponge type material between the dash and the engine. It is really deteriorated and full of oil/gunk. What is this material supposed to be and what is the function? Is it a fire shield, a heat shield, a noise shield? The parts from Deere for it are very expensive and I would like to find an alternate. I need to know the function a little better. Paul

JD spec's state it's foam.

The replacement is not as dense as the original and the flimsy coating will come off. As I remember the original is thicker also.
I've seen foam close to the original at seat recovering shops.

I have been using the black foam same as the 40 series cab kits, local jd dealer has it in a bulk roll. It looks good and keeps the trash from working into/under the dash. chris
