Ray Durham 03-17-2013 12:20:54 68.98.196.60 Report to Moderator	I have a 1945 John Deere hand start model A. Thinking about replacing the point/condenser set. Do I need the kit for a Wico "C" or "X" magneto. Just had the carburetor rebuilt and it starts fairly easy (still trying to find the sweet spot with the choke). Seems to need some choking even after it starts. Why is this? The flywheel is timed (installed)correctly. I guess what I really need is advice as to how to get it to run smooth at low idle and high speed. I particularily want to get it to where it will just sit there and cluck away at low idle. It will seldom ever get run at high speed. How do you know if your throttle lever is set correctly? Thanks. ray [Reply]   [No Email]

And make sure the timing and angle is set correctly. The throttle linkage should be free and clear of hangups, and be set to a half hole off throttle arm on carb. Then use the stop screw to eliminate any hunting it may want to do. And make certian there are no air leaks, use carb cleaner for this test. [Reply]  [No Email]

The X has one large cap, the C has two caps. One large, one small with a wire from one to the other. Your idle passage is probably plugged up, need to clean with small bits and carb cleaner. Was the rebuild a professional job? For the throttle setting, one almost has to use a tachometer or a dyno to correctly check the engine speed at idle and full throttle. I could do it if i was there, but thats not possible. Do you have the owners manual? There is some valuable information in there about throttle settings. I use a handheld multi meter with a built in tachometer to set most of them, pricey to buy but works great. [Reply]  [No Email]

The carburetor was professionally rebuilt by Burrey. Actually, I don't think the carburetor is the problem.....other than tweaking the high/low idle now that it is back on the tractor.
