My neighbor and I purchased a 3020 diesel that has not run in a few years because a tree fell on it. We want to tow it for a few miles. I know the brakes will not work. It has a syncro-range trans and the shift lever is broken off. My question is, can we tow it by just having the clutch in? The owners manual says there is tow position but I am not sure if I can get it into the right position.
Thanks, Ted

Any Sychro Range transmission "Must" be in tow position to move even a little bit, without the top shaft driving the transmission pump it will gauld the gear on the top shaft, from lack of lube oil. When they are in "Tow" position the bottom shaft is in a complete nutruel position and no gears are turning in the transmission, since the shifter is broken it would be hard to keep it in the tow position. This tow position "spot" is not detented and is a small place in the shift pattern, a bump or Jiggle would let it fall out of place unknowingly while you were on the move.Yes I would haul it..

Better haul it, tow position on dash only safe to use WITH engine running so trans pump will keep shafts and gears lubed. Learned that the hard way years ago. Only safe way to tow if not running I have found, block clutch pedal down completely and place trans in 8th gear. This way trans pump will be driven through the gearset and input shaft as needed.

I second the trailer or truck so no one gets hurt.No brakes or steering and possible trans mission damage makes hauling cheap. That small of tractor our local rent all place has trailers for $25 a day.If not in tow it doesnt take very far to have a big repair bill.

There is no way I would want to attempt to tow a JD tractor with a syncro-range trans any distance at all. Hardly no steering or brakes would be enough determent and the throw in the expense and labor to repair the galled gears on the top trans shaft if the correct "tow position" wasn't attained.

A $500 haul on a rollback truck would seem cheap if an accident incurred or gears got galled

The synchro-range transmissions need to be in the TOW position to prevent damage to the transmission from lack of lubrication, the topshaft if I recall correctly. To be sure and prevent damage, you need to get it into TOW. Pull the console off, and you should be able to move the shifter quadrants (or whatever they are called) manually. The "stick" just moves the quadrants, you can see the shift linkages hooked to them, and you should be able to figure out where to put them with the shift pattern sticker.
