OhioTractorGuy 02-17-2013 07:11:37 50.51.20.133 Report to Moderator	Re: john deere 420 standard in reply to mkr100, 02-16-2013 20:31:16   As Bob mentions below, you likely have a bad/worn bearing on your input shaft or cluster gear assembly down in the transmission. Good news is the bearings are still available; bad news is the entire back half of the tractor has to come apart to get down into the transmission for a rebuild. Not a difficult project, have done it many times but just takes time. One of the main causes is lack of bearing lubrication. . . the input shaft bearings do not sit down in the gear oil and depend on splash/carry up lubrication. There is a small trough on the left side of the transmission case that directs oil to the front input shaft bearing. The trough can get blocked and the front bearing will fail if no oil is carried up to lubricate it. [Reply]  [No Email]

In neutral with clutch engaged, only the trans main shaft (input shaft) is turning look for bad bearing there. [Reply]  [No Email]
