i got a 4010 i just rerplaced the crank in,now it wont start,iv got crank and cam timed with its marks, tdc line in center of window, oil pump lined up right, front piston at top dead center, and then valves closed, pretty much timed, but tractor wont start, there was a newly rebuilt injector pump just redone by a man with 40 years expierence, but it wont start up,it smokes blue meanuing timing could be off,but i cant see nothing off unless the wrong piston is at tdc, anyone know where i went wrong?tractor was running perfect till i tried this fresh pump, and no air in system either, but will fire off with ether also where is the best place to start off at timing?id the numbers above tdc the top numbers and the numbers below btdc? |

When I'm putting one back together I always leave the cam timing marks exposed and lined up then time the oil pump, then set the injector pump in and make sure it's timed while I can still see the cam marks timed too, this assures that "all" time is correct,,no chance of being 180% out on the pump.

Is this the original injection pump without speed advance? Without looking at the book I think the 4010 was timed at 14 degrees before tdc which would be the numbers above the tdc mark. Replacement pump with speed advance is timed different but not tdc either. I'll look at the book when I get to the shop in the morning. Could it be 180 degrees off? Maybe was on #6 when the oil pump was installed and timed?

I looked in the book this morning. 4010 without speed advance is timed at 14 degrees before tdc. With speed advance timed at 8 degrees before tdc.

If it will start on either, the timeing has got ot be real close, something is wrong with that pump. Take it to a certified diesel shop.
