The legislators in the UK , maybe the rest of Europe weren't happy with the transmission locking style parking brakes , not because of any problems with efficiency , but they wanted an emergency brake . Its not something you would want to do too many times in the Mannheim style utilities , as the handbrake is wrapped around the diff housing , and isn't designed for repeated use on a moving tractor . However it can be applied if need be in an emergency situation , unlike the transmission locking type .
When the 6000 series came out in Europe in '92, the transmission lock was a revelation , as people like me who grew up with 30/40/50 series were amazed at the ability to hold a heavily laden tractor on the steepest of slopes , safely .
