Just got through replacing the whole rebuilt two stage clutch assembly in a JD 5200. When I got it all coupled back together I had a home made tool attached to the PTO that I"ve used over the years to turn the PTO when trying to get the splines to align and couple up. After it was together I could turn the PTO with no resistance at all with the special lever tool on the PTO shaft. This has me really worried as I can't understand how this could be. The lever was not even connected to the PTO throw out bearing when the free turning PTO was found. After I installed the PTO connecting rod to the PTO through out lever I could advance the lever to the down and locked position and there is now resistance on the PTO. My thinking is that it should be just the opposite????? Please help me understand what is happening and if the PTO is going to work as it should????? Thanks, Zane |

| Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see the pto should turn free with lever back the release bearing is not a release bearing it is used to engage the pto the way you describe it. it should work ok when the 5000 series came out i was working a a deere dealer ship and we had to remove the pan in replace the thrush bearing to a different type as the pressure on crank was wearing out the thrush bearings, as was the case with the first 10 series tractor |

| | You sure have relieved my brain on this one! Thanks for that information. I suspected that. I am wondering how in the heck can the PTO clutch disc be aligned when there is no pressure on it when it is assembled?????? Is that the reason I had such a hard time getting the tractor to couple up when re connecting the front and rear halves?????????????? I know I never want to do another one. I'm just too old for all that crawling around on the ground on a creeper etc. Thanks again, Zane |

| | I certainly do appreciate the offer but the PTO clutch has been pretty well decribed to me in the above post. It appears that is is similar to an old model knuckle clutch except in this case the throw out bearing for the PTO is not a throwout but instead puts pressure against the PTO clutch and runs continously as long as the PTO is engaged. In my opinion not a good idea????? Zane |
