In my tractor stable i have alot of different brand of tractors and i just aquired a 730 diesel. i know about 2 cylinder gas tractors as i have 2 jd 60's.
Heres my problem: this tractor was running last winter and has been parked with the fuel in the off postion. we went to get this tractor and now it has around 5 gallons of diesel in the oil. now i know that the fuel shutoff can be bad but should it leak into the crank case?? can i put a manual shut off in the line going to the transfer pump? |

| The leak can also occur around the injection pump seals as well as the threads of the bleed valve. You can check this by getting the fuel level in the tank below the return straw. You can shine a light in the tank to see it.If it still makes crankcase fuel after getting the fuel level below the straw then you can surely say it is the supply pump seals. |

| anything i need to watch out for when pulling the transfer pump?? I took the sediment bowl apart and cleaned the bowl, rpcled the gasket and when its off it's not leaking at all. it still has diesel in the tank which we thought all drained out. This was my papa's tractor and i traded my uncle out of it and he said this was the first time its ever done that. I truely had a feeling its prolly in the transfer pump. |

Nothing special to the removal. Watch when you replace it that it is lined up with the drive tangs. I once left one plumbed and after a bit you could watch it drip. They have a tendency to wear a groove where the seal lips rides, and that can cause a drip even after new seals are installed. I had Albert at Renaissance Tractor rework my 70D as I was very busy on the road at the time. He uses different seals that will ride in a fresh spot. |

| The shaft for that transfer pump is available from Deere, but sit down before you ask the price. I had some trouble with my 720 last spring. I found another avenue for repair, but three hundred something sticks in my mind. |

| Fuel shut off does not come into play, since when you pull the throttle back, you have shut the fuel off at the rack, and those clearances are a thousand times closer than the sediment bowl. Your problem, IMHO, is that the fuel is leaking past the inner seal of the fuel transfer pump, and into the governor housing, then into the crankcase sump. Gravity can cause this one.
Now, if it had been running a lot lately and then it developed a diesel filled crankcase, it could be other things such as acracked injector line, or as simple as a loose injector line nut. If the line is cracked or the nut is loose, it normally will miss just a bit on that cylinder. I'd look at the transfer pump. I bet the weep hole on the bottom of it is clogged shut as well. |

| The sediment bowl valve could be leaking but I doubt it since they rarely get turned on and off enough times to put any wear on the sealing surfaces. Dirt could have caused the valve to not seal when turned off or the packing nut adjusted too tight to stop a leak could have given a false sense of the valve being tight and seated but it was really just tight to turn. However, where I would start looking first is in the bleed off line that comes up out of the left side of the injection pump cover and goes into the adapter which the sediment bowl screws into. I have had two 730s which had the injection pump bracket cracked because that fitting going through the cover is a pipe thread into the pump bracket and the bracket is not very heavy walled around the hole and it will crack and then you have a leak path. |
