What is the story on the hyraulic front wheel drive 4230? Is it a good machine. Is the FWA reliable? The one I am looking at is a 1976 model |

I never think about them as I've only seen one in my JD experience. |

I didn't find any reference to MFWD in the 4240 parts catalog only HFWA. |

| Certainly a rare machine. Deere made much higher volume pumps for use in the large articulated tractors and industrial equipment. I"ve wondered if a pump with enough volume to maintain pressure was transplanted in? If the front wheels would actually pull instead of "assist" ? |

| That is what it would take to make them work ,,Deere used near the same drives on their combines, but used the hydrostatic transmission for the power supply, they will spike up to 8,000 psi. which makes them an aggressive drive axle., Near 4 times the normal pressure on the tractors.Plus the power flow is divided up nicely between all the drive wheels.. |

| The Hydraulic front end don"t really do much, the pump don"t develop enough pressure to make it work out...if you want front wheel drive you need to go to a 50 series with shaft drive... |

| The FWA was only meant to get the tractor out of a tough spot in the field and not intended for full time use in the field. I would only buy the FWA from a collector standpoint. A mechanical front wheel drive such as a White 2-105 would have is better. I know this is a Deere board but you could buy the 2-105 for less money and have more tractor. The "Deere" solution would be to go to the 4050 which would have been the first Deere to have a MFWD in the same size as a 4230. Generally the 4050 with MFWD and cab is thirty thousand dollars or more. Don't see too many come up for auction unfortunately. |
