My brother has a 4020 that is new to him, and it has presented a problem: The power steering works just fine, but when he tried to hook up a remote cylinder, there was nothing. The hydraulic fluid is fresh, but he changed out the filter to be sure, old filter was okay, put in new one, refilled reservoir, still no hydraulic pressure for remote cylinder. Any thoughts for diagnosis? Thanks. |

This has been a windfall of timely advice, and it is much appreciated. But I'm guessing it will be Thanksgiving before any of this gets checked out and confirmed. As they used to say on the old AM radio shows, "Please Stand By..."

Correct David G, at the lower pressure i described in dad's 4020 he was losing almost all the pressure to the priority valve to keep steering and brakes. Either there is a leak in the system losing pressure or the stroke controller is not adjusted. Once you adjust it as Tim described the pressure should rise and the problems go away :)

I would go with Tim S, priority valve not getting enough pressure.

It sounds like what my dad's 4020 did after Deere put a new hydraulic pump. It steered and braked fine, it could barely lift the back end of a f145 plow, same for a 15' disc. They tried to say it was that he chose the cheaper pump not from them and wouldn't look at it. After a few years a friend (who worked at a different dealership) put the gauge on it and the pressure was 1500-1700 psi. Kelly turned the pump up to 2250 and everything works great now. Get a liquid filled 5k psi gauge, a few fittings and a JD male hydraulic nipple and plug it in back there and see what it goes to when you pull the lever.

4020_1966 if you use a dry guage you can tell if the valves are leaking in the pump, by the needle bouncing around, but you will get more of an accurate ready with the liquid filled guage. Did this same thing for a friend/customer, he talked to a CSR man at the local JD dealership and a friend of ours. Friend talked to the CSR about his early 4020 that the three point wasn't working, but the steering/brakes are fine. And then he calls me to check his priority valve, because thats what the CRS told him to check. So I drive down to his place to check the priority valve to make him happy. Pull the hood and take it out and show him that there is nothing wrong with this. Then I tell him what I wanted to do, install a guage in the remotes and checked pressure, wasn't much, so adjust the pump up to specs, and the three point works. He looks at me and said you knew this all along, I nodded my head and smiled. And said isn't this much easier. He asks my opinion from now on. I did adjust it a few times until there was no adjustment then I overhauled the pump for him. chris

I would say the stroke control valve in the pump is bad. That will erode letting the pressure drop. It and the seat can be changed in the tractor butbe prepared to get oil down your sleeves. Check stand-by pressure and then see if you can adjust it.

The tractor is actually mine. Hugh was assisting me in the diagnosis area. The remote works slowly and with insufficient pressure to pick up a 4-row disc. The 3-point works but maybe a little slower than it should. Don't know how much it will lift since I don't have any 3-point equipment yet.

|
The stand by pressure could be below 1700psi closing the priority valve, leaving you with only steering and brakes, this can be corrected by turning the stroke control valve "in" CW till the pressure is at or near 2250psi.

I agree with Mike A. on the levers may not have been turned. I'd suggest checking stand-by pressure. It should be 2250 psi. Another possibility is pressure control(priority) valve could be blocking oil flow to SCV. Does 3pt operate if equipped????

Might help to know if it's early or late model, i.e., where are the control levers?

It's a late model, the control levers are on the right side of the seat. Do you need the serial number? Thanks.

Hugh, is it possible your friend forgot to turn on the faucet levers for each hose? Just a thought. Mike
